VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior infielder
Alli Richmond drove in three runs while junior catcher
Quinn DeCicco and freshman outfielder
Sarah Rende each had two RBI, powering Binghamton (20-21, 7-8 AE) to a 10-3 win over UMBC (28-10, 12-6 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats will carry the No. 4 seed into the upcoming America East Tournament – which they will host – and will begin the double-elimination tournament against No. 5 Hartford on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
Richmond, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI, extended her hitting streak to a career-best 10 games. That is the longest hitting streak by a Binghamton player since Jessica Rutherford reeled off an 11-game hitting streak during the 2018 season. For the season, Richmond leads the team in hitting (.316), doubles (15), RBI (26) and is tied for first with six home runs.
DeCicco finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run. Rende, meanwhile, was 2-for-3 with a double. For the season, Rende now ranks second on the team with 21 RBI and is tied with Richmond for the team lead with six home runs.
The Bearcats scored 10 runs for the fourth time in the past seven games. In addition, their five doubles against the Retrievers was their highest total of the season.
"I am super proud of our team today," head coach
Jess Bump said. "We played really well today and got everyone into the lineup."
Richmond and Rende staked Binghamton to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Richmond double in the first run and scored two batters later on Rende's RBI single.
The Bearcats scored twice more in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. DeCicco led off the frame with her third home run of the season. One inning later, DeCicco's RBI single padded Binghamton's lead to 5-1.
After UMBC got a pair of runs back in the top of the fourth inning, the Bearcats blew the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 10-3. Richmond doubled home a pair of runs during that frame while Rende doubled in another run.
Senior pitcher
Morgan Bienkowski, who was one of four players honored during the Bearcats' pregame Senior Day ceremony, improved to 1-0 with the win. The loss was tagged to Madie Leach, who is now 2-3.
In addition to Bienkowski, seniors
Makayla Alvarez and
Marissa Braito as well as graduate student pitcher
Chelsea Howard were the other Bearcats playing in their final regular-season home game on Sunday. Howard tossed 2.2 scoreless innings in relief of Bienkowski.
Binghamton is hosting the America East Tournament for the fifth time in 10 seasons. The Bearcats also were the home team in 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
NOTES: The two doubles and three RBI by Richmond both tied her career highs. She finished the series against UMBC 4-for-10 (.400) … also batting .400 against UMBC was DeCicco (2-for-5) … Rende was 3-for-8 against the Retrievers (.375) … the 20 wins marks Binghamton's highest victory total since 2017, when it finished with 22 wins.
