HARRISONBURG, Va. – Harrison Coron and Antonio Illuminato each scored in the first half, powering Drexel (1-0-1) to a 2-0 win over Binghamton (0-2-0) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Sunday afternoon at Sentera Field. The match took place in the final round of the James Madison Invitational, which began on Thursday.
The Bearcats were down a player just five minutes into the match. Drexel wasted little time taking advantage of the extra player as Coron scored in the sixth minute. His goal was unassisted.
Before the multiple bookings, Binghamton started the match on a strong note. They scored in the third minute but the goal was disallowed due to an offsides call.
In the 30th minute, Illuminato padded the Dragons' lead to 2-0 when his shot found the top left-hand corner of the net. The assists were credited to Kyle Tucker and Valtteri Hiilloskorpi.
From there, play settled down for the remainder of the match. Although the Dragons finished with a 23-2 shot advantage, the margin was just 8-0 during the second half.
In goal, senior
Mats Roorda finished with six saves - all of which came after the two Drexel goals.
"I thought we played hard and stayed together as the match went on," head coach
Paul Marco said. "It's unfortunate that the match had to start out the way it did."
