VESTAL, N.Y. – Ryan Carmichael scored in the 54th minute, lifting Hofstra (5-2-0) to a 1-0 win over Binghamton (0-5-2) in a non-conference men's soccer match on Tuesday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The contest concluded the Bearcats' season-high, three-game home stand and also marked the Pride's fourth-straight one-goal victory.
Carmichael, who now has four goals so far this season, finished off a cross from right in front of the goal. The ball was directed towards the net by Nico Obberrauch. Eliot Goldthorp was also credited with an assist on the play.
Despite the loss, senior goalkeeper
Mats Roorda turned in an impressive performance for the Bearcats. He finished with four saves, including a penalty kick save off an attempt by Goldthorp in the 13th minute. Goldthorp, who would have scored his fifth goal of the season on the play, shot the ball to his right but Roorda dove to make the save.
In the closing 10 minutes of the match, Binghamton nearly got the equalizer. Hofstra goalkeeper Wessel Speel, however, came up with a big save in the closing minutes and the Pride defense made a key block in front of the net during that stretch.
"I though our group took another step forward tonight," head coach
Paul Marco said. "We didn't get the result we wanted but we put forth another good performance. I think we are really close and it was a fantastic game to watch. Both goalkeepers had to make some big-time saves. I thought Mats played very good in the goal. Overall, we are getting better but we need to turn the corner and start getting some goals."
Hofstra finished with an 9-6 advantage in total shots and a 5-4 lead in shots on goal.
Binghamton opens up its conference schedule at defending champion Vermont on Saturday at 7 p.m.
NOTE: Roorda is the first Binghamton goalkeeper to save a penalty kick since teammate
P.J. Parker did the same at UMBC on Oct. 13, 2021.
