LOWELL, Mass. – Redshirt freshman guard
Ella Wanzer scored a team-high 23 points, leading Binghamton (10-8, 3-2 AE) to a 77-68 win over UMass Lowell (1-14, 0-5 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Costello Center. With the victory, the Bearcats have won three out of their last four games as well as two straight road contests.
The 77 points ties the Bearcats' best offensive output of the season, which they set against Fairfield back on Dec. 3. In addition, Binghamton finished with nine three-point field goals, which was their second-best performance of the year.
Wanzer, who has reached the 20-point mark in scoring two straight games, went 7-for-12 from the field against the River Hawks, was 5-for-7 from three-point range and 4-for-5 from the free throw line. She also finished with seven rebounds, an assist and a pair of steals.
Three other Binghamton players reached double figures in scoring. Senior forward
Clare Traeger turned in a 15-point, eight-rebound, three-steal performance while redshirt freshman guard
Jadyn Weltz had 13 points and a career-high seven assists. Sophomore forward
Genevieve Coleman, meanwhile, chipped in 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Wanzer sank four of her three-point field goals during the first period as the Bearcats went up 26-16 after 10 minutes of play. The River Hawks stormed back to take a 37-36 lead at the half and then went up 47-39 with 6:10 left in the third period.
Binghamton responded with an 11-2 run to go up 50-49 with 2:45 left in the third period. Traeger had five of her points during that stretch and Wanzer canned her final three-point field goal.
The score was tied at 54-54 heading into the fourth period but Binghamton seized control of the game with a 13-2 run in the ensuing 4:18 to go up 67-56. Five different Bearcat players scored during that stretch.
UMass Lowell got to within 72-66 with 32 seconds remaining but the Bearcats iced the game by going 5-for-6 at the free throw line the rest of the way. Freshman forward
Camryn Fauria went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line during that span.
"Today was definitely a game of runs but at the end when it mattered, our girls really dialed in and focused on rebounding - first and foremost - and getting stops," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We were able to make some big shots at the end and we knocked down some huge free throws."
Jaliena Sanchez of UMass Lowell finished with a game-high 24 points. Joining her in double figures were Ivory Finley (13 points) and Amaya Dowdy, who turned in a 10-point, nine-rebound, three block effort.
Binghamton shot 45 percent from the game (24-of-53) as well as 56 percent (9-of-16) from beyond the three-point arc.
Wanzer has averaged 24.5 points in the past two games. For the season, she is now averaging 11.4 points per game.
Binghamton hosts first-place Albany on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
