Men’s Soccer Loses 2-1 to Cornell in 1,000th Game

Big Red nets game winner in 87th minute

VESTAL, N.Y. – Connor Miller scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute and Connor Drought finished with a goal and an assist, lifting Cornell (7-3-2) to a 2-1 win over Binghamton (3-8-2) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Tuesday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The contest marked the 1,000th match for the Binghamton men's soccer program, dating back to its inception in 1960.

Miller's goal was set up by Drought, who fired a cross into the box. It landed by Alex Harris who got the ball to Miller right in front of the goal. It was the first goal of the season for Miller.

The turning point of the match, however, came in the 81st minute, when the Bearcats went a player down due to a red card. From that point on, the Big Red controlled possession and eventually scored on its final shot of the game.

"I thought our guys played really hard today against a very good opponent," head coach Paul Marco said. "We especially came out really good in the second half but we are disappointed with how the match ended."

The Big Red outshot Binghamton 11-1 over the first 45 minutes and took a 1-0 lead into the break. Drought scored from close range n the 27th minute with the assist going to Balazs Feher.

Binghamton, however, came out strong to start the second half. Redshirt freshman back Cailen Thomas finished off a corner kick by graduate student forward Jack Green. It marked the first goal of Thomas' collegiate career and the team-best fourth assist of the season for Green.

The Bearcats narrowed the shot deficit to 7-4 in the second half of play but did not manage a shot following the red card.

In addition to its 18-5 shot advantage, Cornell had an 8-1 lead in shots on goal. Possession time favored the Big Red 59-41 percent.

In goal, sophomore Jack Root made four saves in the first half and graduate student Dylan McDermott stopped three shots over the final 45 minutes.

Binghamton returns to America East play on Saturday with a 3 p.m. match at UMass Lowell.
