Women's soccer hosts Maine in Sunday showdown

Bearcats can clinch No. 1 seed and second-straight regular season title with win on Senior Day

VESTAL, N.Y. - Surging Binghamton women's soccer has positioned itself for a big game on Senior Day Sunday when the first-place Bearcats (5-4-5, 4-0-2 America East) welcome second-place Maine (9-1-4, 4-1-1 AE). The teams kick off at noon at the Bearcats Sports Complex and Binghamton can clinch a second-straight regular season title and No. 1 tournament seed with a victory.

There are still two games remaining in the regular season, so a tie keeps BU in first place heading into its finale Thursday night at NJIT. But for Sunday, the Bearcats will carry a seven-game unbeaten streak into a tilt with an opponent who has lost just once in its last 14 conference games. Binghamton's unbeaten streak is the program's longest in 22 years, since BU's inaugural Division I team in 2001 stretched out a 10-game unbeaten string.

The Bearcats have won back-to-back 2-0 decisions, including a shutout of Vermont one week ago. Senior defender Lexi Vegoda leads the team with 12 points, thanks in part to a perfect 4-for-4 performance from the penalty spot. Junior keeper Kaitlyn Williams has a 1.15 goals against average and a 80.5 win percentage. She is the two-time reigning America East Defensive Player of the Week.

On Sunday, BU will honor its five seniors: Emma Colling, Hannah Knych, Molly McClelland, Davia Rossi and Lexi Vegoda.

Maine was sailing along unbeaten on the season until Oct. 12 when UMass Lowell delivered a 2-0 setback. The Black Bears still have only lost once in their last 14 conference games (8-1-5) spanning two seasons. In their last outing one week ago, Maine blanked visiting Bryant 2-0.  Junior forward Abby Kraemer leads the team and the America East with 10 goals. The reigning second team all-conference selection also has four assists for a league-leading 24 points. No other Black Bear player has more than three goals but 13 different players have scored this season (BU has eight). Maine has been a second-half team, scoring nearly three times as many goals in the final 45 minutes (22) as the opening half (8). Reigning conference Goalkeeper of the Year Kira Kutzinski has a 0.86 goals against average and an 80.3 save percentage.

Binghamton holds a 12-5-5 advantage in the all-time series, but Maine is unbeaten in the last three matchups (1-0-2). The teams have played to a scoreless draw in each of the last two seasons. At home, BU is 5-3-3 in the series, with the last win coming in 2018 (1-0). Sixteen of the 22 head-to-head games have been ties or one-goal decisions.
