LOWELL, Mass. - Visiting Binghamton women's soccer (4-4-5, 3-0-2 America East) tallied once in each half and blanked UMass Lowell (1-5-5, 1-2-1 AE) 2-0 Sunday afternoon from Cushing Field. With the win, BU extended its unbeaten streak to six games and remained in first place in the conference standings with three games remaining in the regular season.
Senior defender
Lexi Vegoda scored on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute and sophomore forward
Samiya Reid added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute. Junior keeper
Kaitlyn Williams made seven saves and the Bearcats notched their fourth shutout of the season.
"We are really pleased to bring back three important conference points today," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We had to work for this one and needed to do all we could defensively for the shutout and then to be efficient on the chances we got. UMass Lowell gave us some issues we had to work through, especially after their halftime adjustments. But we responded well and did what we needed to do to pick up an important America East win. We will enjoy this for a moment before turning our attention to a talented Vermont team back at home next weekend."
On the play that resulted in the first-half goal, Vegoda sent a long ball into the box, where junior forward
Hannah Knych was bowled over by a River Hawks defender, resulting in the whistle. Vegoda then deposited her strike into the top corner for her fourth goal of the season - all on penalties. She is 4-for-4 in attempts from the spot this season.
With BU nursing a 1-0 lead late in the game and being outshot, Reid provided a crucial second goal with a strong effort on the ball. Freshman back
Sophia Garofalo sent a long ball into the box and Reid outmaneuvered a UML defender to reach the ball and then sent a chip over the keeper to the far post for her second goal of the season.Â
The Bearcats were outshot 19-9 but the shots on goal stat was much closer with UML having a 7-5 edge.Â
Binghamton hosts Vermont at 1 p.m. next Sunday.Â
