Women’s Basketball Loses 67-54 to Vermont

Bowman nets game-high 16 points, Traeger pulls down nine rebounds

VESTAL, N.Y. – Visiting Vermont (21-6, 13-2 AE) shot 54.5 percent (24-of-44) and placed four players in double figures to defeat Binghamton (13-15, 6-9 AE) 67-54 in an America East women's basketball game on Wednesday evening at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The contest marked the Bearcats' final regular-season home game of the year.

Emma Utterback led a balanced Catamount attack with 13 points to go along with eight rebounds and a game-high eight assists. Also reached double figures in the winning effort were Catherine Gilwee (12 points), Anna Olson (11 points) and Paula Gonzales (10 points).

Senior guard Denai Bowman led all scorers with 16 points, going 7-for-11 from the field in the process and making a pair of free throws. For her career, Bowman now has 1,181 points and moves into 12th place all time in Binghamton program history. Against Vermont, she surpassed Viive Rebane, who scored 1,176 points from 2008-12.

Senior forward Clare Traeger, who came into the game ranked second in the America East with 8.7 rebounds per game, grabbed a game-high nine rebounds against the Catamounts. She also netted six points and tied for the game-high with three steals.

Vermont got the separation it needed in the first half, shooting 61 percent (14-23) to take a 37-23 lead at the break. Olson, Gilwee and Delaney Richason each had a team-high seven points in the opening 20 minutes of play.

Binghamton was able to pull to within single digits when Bowman canned a step-back jump shot with 5:01 left in regulation, trimming the deficit to 54-45. In the final three minutes, however, Vermont got three-point field goals from Utterback and Bella Vito to ice the game.

From beyond the arc, Vermont went 8-for-13 (61.5 percent). Binghamton, by contrast, was just 2-of-15 from three-point range (13.3 percent).

Vermont finished with a 37-24 advantage in rebounding as well as a 17-5 lead in assists. The Catamounts also scored 13 of their points in transition as opposed to two for the Bearcats.

"Vermont does a very good job in transition and in speeding up the game, head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "That is a really good team that beat us and they showed tonight why they are in the top two (of the America East). They have a lot of weapons and they all showed up tonight,"

Sophomore forward Genevieve Coleman added eight points for the Bearcats and tied Trager for the game high with three steals.

With one game left in the regular season (at Maine on Saturday at 1 p.m.), Binghamton is locked into the No. 6 seed in the upcoming America East Tournament and will play its quarterfinal game on the road. Depending on the results of Saturday's game, the Bearcats will either play at Maine again or head to UMBC for the first round of the post-season next Wednesday.
