Baseball rolls past George Washington 17-8

Roselli collects 7 RBI; BU plates 12 runs in first inning to build huge lead

ARLINGTON, Va. - Binghamton baseball (5-7) erupted for 12 runs in the first inning and cruised past George Washington (4-12) 17-8 in the rubber game of the weekend set at Tucker Field. The Bearcats have won four of their last six.

Right out of the gate, BU put the pressure on GW pitchers. When the 30+ minute top-of-the-first inning ended, 18 Bearcat hitters had produced 12 runs on seven hits and six walks.

Sophomore third baseman Nick Roselli got his big day started with a three-run home run over the right field wall - that gave BU a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning as the Bearcats batted around, Roselli plated another run with a sacrifice fly. That fly ball made it 9-0. Freshman shortstop Mike Stellrecht, sophomore center fielder Logan Haskell, senior first baseman Kevin Gsell and sophomore third baseman Devan Bade also added RBI hits.

Oddly, over the next eight innings, GW outscored BU 7-1 as the Bearcats were held to just one hit over a seven-inning span.

Then with a slightly uncomfortable 13-7 lead, BU used a four-run ninth to fully close the door. Roselli had a bit hand in that with a bases clearing triple that eluded the left fielder and raised his RBI total to seven for the day. Gsell added an RBI single to close out the Bearcats' offensive surge.

Roselli wound up 2-for-3 with a home run, triple, four runs scored and the career-high seven RBI. Gsell finished off a strong weekend with a three-hit, three-RBI day. On the weekend, Gsell went 6-for-12 with two doubles, a home run and five RBI.

Senior starter Ryan Bryggman notched his first win of the season with 5.1 innings. He struck out three and allowed three runs before four BU relievers went the rest of the way.

Binghamton now will watch the weather ahead of what is scheduled to be the team's home opening weekend series against Lafayette, starting with a Friday afternoon game.
