UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State (12-5) scored 10 runs in their final two innings to pull away from Binghamton baseball (8-8) 15-1 Tuesday night at Medlar Park. The loss against the Big Ten member Nittany Lions snapped BU's four-game win streak.
The Bearcats nearly matched PSU in hits but left 12 runners stranded, including the bases loaded on three separate occasions. Penn State led 5-1 before blowing the game open late with six runs in the seventh inning and four in the eighth. In its final non-conference game before beginning defense of its America East crown, Binghamton subbed liberally with eight pitchers and 16 position players all getting time.Â
Binghamton was outhit 13-10 and Penn State used two home runs to aid its output.
Senior first baseman
Kevin Gsell went 4-for-4 with a double to highlight BU's offense.
Freshman right-hander
Dan McAliney went 3.0 innings and allowed just one hit and one run in his first collegiate start.
The Bearcats loaded the bases in the second inning with no out but came away empty. They then loaded them in the third inning but came away with just one run on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman
Devan Bade. Senior left fielder
Cavan Tully led off with a single and with one out, junior DH
Mike Gunning and Gsell hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Bade's RBI gave BU a 1-0 lead.
But Penn State tied it on a double and wild pitch in the bottom of the frame and then the Nittany Lions used a 3-run home run to jump ahead 4-1 in the fourth inning. A two-out, solo home run made it a 5-1 game in the fifth. The hosts then broke it open with six runs on four hits in the seventh and closed the scoring with four runs on four hits in the eighth.
Binghamton hosts UMass Lowell in a three-game weekend series to open conference play. It's a rematch of the 2022 America East championship round, where the Bearcats captured the program's fifth title with a 7-1 win up in Maine.    Â
