Softball Sweeps Maine 9-1 and 4-3

Rende goes 6-for-7 with 4 RBI as Bearcats have now won 10 of last 12 games

VESTAL, N.Y. – Sophomore outfielder Sarah Rende went 6-for-7 (.857) with three extra-base hits and four RBI, powering Binghamton (13-7, 2-0 AE) to a 9-1, 4-3 sweep over Maine (7-20, 0-2 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Sunday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victories, the Bearcats have now won 10 out of their last 12 games.

Rende, who had three hits in each game, finished the day with a pair of doubles and a triple. She also scored three times and her slugging percentage for the day with 1.429.

Redshirt sophomore utility player Lindsey Walter continued to come through at the plate and on the mound. She went 4-for-5, scored four runs and tossed 3.1 scoreless innings to get the win in the second game.

Senior first baseman Alex Musial was 2-for-4 (.500) with a walk and a pair of RBI while sophomore outfielder Laney Harbaugh was 2-for-5 (.400).

Walter and Rende each scored unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning of the opening game, giving the Bearcats an early 2-0 lead. The Black Bears committed a pair of miscues during that frame.

Two innings later, Binghamton took advantage of two more Maine errors to score four more runs. Rende belted a triple and reached home on a fielding error. Walter, meanwhile, clubbed an RBI double and reached third base on a miscue.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Rende and Musial each singled home a run as part of a three-run inning, padding the lead to 9-0. That gave freshman pitcher Brianna Roberts the run support she needed to finish off the game in five innings.

Roberts is now 5-1, having scattered one run on three hits with six strikeouts against Maine. Caitlyn Fallon took the loss, dropping her record to 4-9.

In the night cap, Katie Jo Moery slugged a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, giving the Black Bears a brief 2-0 cushion. Rende, however, struck back with a two-run single in the bottom of the same inning to tie the game at 2-2.

The two teams then traded runs – Maine in the fifth inning and the Bearcats in the sixth inning – sending the game into the bottom of the seventh inning tied at 3-3. Walter led off that frame with a bunt single and was sacrificed over to second base by redshirt sophomore third baseman Brianna Santos. That set the stage for Rende, who belted a double passed the center fielder which sent Walter home with the winning run.

"I think we have been played well the past few weeks," head coach Jess Bump said. "We have been playing aggressive and we've had an edge to us. We got the bats going in game one today and what we talked about after that was that we can't assume that we could do it again in the next game. We got down twice in the second game – came back twice – and that goes back to us preparing for conference play the right way by playing some tough teams early."

Walter, who came on in the fourth inning of game two, improved to 3-1 with the win. She allowed just one hit and did not issue a walk. Her ERA for the season is now a team-best 1.71.

Alysen Reith, who went the distance, was tagged with the loss. Her record is now 3-4.

Binghamton as a team hit .458 during the doubleheader.

Santos and graduate student second baseman Alli Richmond each went 2-for-6 (.333) during the day.

Binghamton heads to Cornell on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. single game.

NOTE: For the season, Walter is now batting a team-best .522 with an on-base percentage of .577. Santos now has a team-best 21 RBI.
