Baseball splits DH with Bryant, wins weekend series

Tully belts 3-run home run in seventh inning of Game 2; Collins closes it after 1:45 lightning delay

VESTAL, N.Y. - Senior left fielder Cavan Tully launched a pivotal 3-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning and Binghamton baseball (13-10, 5-1 America East) rallied past visiting Bryant (12-11, 4-2 AE) 6-4 in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bearcats Baseball Complex. The Bulldogs took the seven-inning opener 6-4.

With the series victory, BU moved to 5-1 in conference play - one game behind Maine at the top of the standings. The Bearcats have won nine of their last 12 games.

After Tully's blast turned a 4-3 BU deficit into the finishing 6-4 margin, both teams had to wait out the completion of the ninth inning after Mother Nature took over. With senior closer Jack Collins on the hill and Bryant pressing for the tying and go-ahead runs with two on and two out in the top of the ninth, the game was delayed after a lightning strike was heard in the vicinity. The ensuing delay was 1:45. When play resumed at 6 pm., the Bulldogs loaded the bases before Collins struck out Bryant's No. 3 hitter to pick up his third save of the season. Graduate reliever Tommy Snyder (W, 2-1) worked 2.1 innings and allowed one run in relief of senior starter Ryan Bryggman (5.2 IP, 3 runs, 7K).

The Bearcats led 2-0 early thanks to an RBI double by senior first baseman Kevin Gsell (2-for-4) in the first inning and an RBI grounder by junior shortstop Isaiah Corry in the second. But Bryant countered with two in the third. The teams traded single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, with BU's tally coming after sophomore second baseman Nick Roselli (2-for-4) hit a one-out double, moved tho third on an error and scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore center fielder Logan Haskell.

But Bryant took a 4-3 lead in the seventh, setting the stage for Tully's heroics in the bottom of the frame. Junior catcher Kevin Reilly led off with a single and Haskell followed with an infield single. After a fielder's choice left runners on first and second with one out, Tully took the first pitch he saw and sent it into over the wall for his second home run of the spring.

In the opener, BU jumped out to a 4-0 lead but Bryant scored runs in four straight innings to win 6-4. After plating the four runs on four hits in the second inning, the Bearcats were held to three hits the rest of the way and the Bulldogs rallied to tie it at 4-4 and then scored the deciding two unearned runs after two Bearcat errors in the sixth.

Roselli went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the second inning - his third of the season. Corry went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Bearcats host St. Bonaventure in a non-conference game at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
