VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting UMBCÂ (21-18, 10-6 America East) scored nine runs in the third inning and that was enough to defeat Binghamton baseball (21-15, 7-6 AE) 10-6 Friday afternoon in the opening game of the weekend series.Â
Binghamton pitchers held the Retrievers to one run over the other eight innings but the damage was done in the third, when UMBC used six hits and four walks to pull away. They scored six runs after two were out to take hold of the game.
The Bearcats pulled to within four, thanks to a four-run seventh-inning but couldn't draw any closer. Binghamton left 11 runners stranded, including the bases loaded in the fifth.
Sophomore second baseman
Nick Roselli went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI. He belted a two-out, solo home run in the third inning and then added a two-run shot in the seventh. They were his team-leading sixth and seventh home runs of the season. He also raised his team-best RBI count to 40, which ranks third in the conference. Sophomore catcher
Evin Sullivan had two hits and an RBI and junior center fielder
Tommy Reifler went 2-for-4 to bump up his America East leading average to .397.
Freshman
Dan McAliney and senior
Kyle Eskildsen combined to work 6.1 scoreless innings in relief. McAliney (3.1 IP) scattered three hits and struck out five. Eskildsen (3.0 IP) allowed just one hit.
Binghamton actually took the lead in the first inning when senior left fielder
Cavan Tully sent an opposite-field home run over the wall in left. It was his third long ball of the season. UMBC tied it with a run in the top of the second. The Bearcats missed a chance to retake the lead after junior right fielder
Mike Gunning doubled to lead off the bottom of the second. But a pop-up, groundout and strikeout left him stuck there.Â
The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon. Before the game, BU will honor its 10 seniors:Â
