Softball Beats Maine 5-3, Clinches Top-2 Seed in AE Tournament

Bearcats win ninth straight game, improve to 29-13

ORONO, Maine – Sophomore outfielder Laney Harbaugh had four hits and graduate student second baseman Alli Richmond drove in a pair of runs, leading Binghamton (29-13, 13-4 AE) to a 5-3 win over Maine (12-35, 3-13 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday at the UMaine Softball Facility. With their ninth straight win, the Bearcats sweep their third straight conference series and clinch a Top-2 seed – and a first-round bye – in the upcoming America East Tournament.

The 29 victories ties the fourth-best, single-season total during Binghamton's 45-year program history. The nine straight victories marks the Bearcats' longest streak since winning 12 games in a row during the 2016 season.

This marks the first time, however, that the Bearcats have swept three straight America East conference series. In addition, Binghamton has now won a program-best 10 straight America East games.

Harbaugh went 4-for-5 at the plate on Sunday to record her third career four-hit game. Her single in the top of the second inning scored Richmond and tied the game up at 1-1.

For the season, Harbaugh is now batting a career-best .353. She currently has a team-best, seven-game hitting streak.

Richmond, meanwhile, was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and scored twice. She broke the 1-1 tie with a two-run double in the top of the third inning.

The two doubles for Richmond tied her career high. For the season, she is now tied for second on the team with 26 RBI and ranks third with nine doubles.

Redshirt sophomore Brianna Santos padded the lead to 4-1 with an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning. It marked her conference-best 39th RBI of the season. One inning later, Richmond scored on a fielding error to put Binghamton up 5-1.

Maine got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning but freshman pitcher Brianna Roberts retired the final six batters of the game to lock up the win.

"As it has been for a few weeks now, all of our wins continue to be total team efforts," head coach Jess Bump said. "This weekend was a bit different where the runs weren't coming as easy but the girls continued to trust all the hard work they've been putting in and found a way to score runs late, pitch well and play sound defense."

Roberts improves to 11-2 for the season. She is now tied for the most wins by a Binghamton freshman pitcher since the program moved up to the NCAA Division I level in 2001. Sarah Miller also won 11 games in 2015.

Taking the loss was Caitlyn Fallon, whose record fell to 6-14.

Santos finished the game 2-for-4 while freshman shortstop Akira Kopec was 2-for-2, scored a run and drew a pair of walks.

Binghamton pounded out 13 hits and did not commit an error for the third game in a row.

Harbaugh finished the three-game series with a team-best .500 batting average (6-for-12) as did Kopec (3-for-6, 4 BB). Sophomore outfielder Sarah Rende, who hit safely in all three games, was 4-for-9 (.444) while Richmond was 4-for-10 (.400) with three RBI. Junior first baseman Allison L'Amoreaux, meanwhile, was 4-for-11 (.363) and currently has a career-high, six-game hitting streak.

As a team, the Bearcats hit .314 in the three-game sweep at Maine.

On the mound, the trio of Roberts, graduate student Sophia Pappas and redshirt sophomore Lindsey Walter held Maine to a .208 batting average and recorded a 1.68 ERA during the weekend.

Binghamton, which is still in contention for the No. 1 seed at the America East Tournament, wraps up the regular season with a three-game series at Albany next Friday and Saturday.

NOTES: The America East Tournament will be held May 10-13 and be hosted by UMBC .. this is the fourth time in program history that the Bearcats will be a Top-2 seed at the conference tournament. They were No. 2 in 2013 and No. 1 in both 2016 and 2017.
