BALTIMORE, Md.—Wendi Hammond fired a two-hit shutout and Jordan Nastos drove in four runs, powering UAlbany (23-18) to a 6-0 win over Binghamton (29-17) in a second-round America East Tournament game at the Diamond at UMBC on Thursday afternoon. With the loss, the Bearcats move into the elimination bracket and their next game is Friday at 1:30 p.m. against Maine.
Hammond, whose record improves to 13-9, allowed only a pair of singles in the bottom of the second inning. She struck out six batters, did not issue a walk and retired the final 17 batters of the game.
Nastos, meanwhile, keyed a three-run top of the fifth inning with a two-run home run. In the top of the seventh inning, she sparked another three-run frame with a two-run double.
Through the first four innings, freshman pitcher
Brianna Roberts held the Great Danes scoreless. She was helped by a pair of tough putouts by senior outfielder
Jill Fittry in the top of the third inning. Fittry's first catch by came when she dove for a line drive and the second one took place when she made a leaping grab at the wall.
Roberts, who threw 145 pitches in 6.1 innings, drops to 11-3.
