SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Host Bryant (25-20, 12-9 America East) took its only lead of the day in its final at-bat and rallied past Binghamton baseball (25-19, 11-10 AE) 6-5 Sunday afternoon at Conaty Park. With the loss, BU falls one game behind Bryant into fourth place with three games remaining in the regular season. Binghamton, which will host the six-team conference tournament on May 24-27, can finish anywhere from third to sixth.
In the rubber game of the weekend series, the Bearcats jumped ahead 4-0 with two runs in each of the first two innings. But Bryant countered with a four-spot in the bottom of the third. Binghamton reclaimed the lead with a run in the sixth but the Bulldogs rallied with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull out the win.
Senior first baseman
Kevin Gsell led BU with a 2-for-4, 2-RBI day. Junior right fielder
Mike Gunning went 2-for-4 with an RBI, sophomore second baseman
Nick Roselli picked up his team-leading 54th RBI of the season and senior left fielder
Cavan Tully added two hits.
In the first inning, junior center fielder
Tommy Reifler singled with one out and stole second. After a Roselli walk, Gsell delivered an RBI single to put BU ahead 1-0. Gunning followed with an RBI single to double the lead. In the second, freshman shortstop
Mike Stellrecht hit a one-out single and Reifler walked with two outs. Roselli then came through with a two-out RBI double to make it 3-0 and Gsell followed with another run-scoring hit to build the lead to 4-0.
But Bryant used two doubles and a three-run home run to tie the game in the third.
In the sixth, Gunning ripped his team-leading 17th double of the season and sophomore third baseman
Devan Bade reached on a bunt single. Junior DH
Andrew Tan plated Gunning with a sacrifice fly to give the Bearcats a 5-4 lead. But the Bulldogs scored the final two runs on two-out hits - a single in the bottom of the seventh to tie it - and a two-out single, wild pitch and infield single sequence to score the deciding run in the bottom of the eighth. The top of BU's order went down 1-2-3 in the ninth to end it.
Senior starter
Ryan Bryggman only allowed four hits in 5.2 innings - and three of those came in the third frame. But he didn't factor into the decision.Â
The Bearcats head to Lowell for the final series of the regular season. The teams will play Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Â
