Baseball ends regular season with 14-13 loss

Bade belts two home runs, drives in five; BU earns No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 NJIT on Wednesday

LOWELL, N.Y. - In another offensive slugfest that featured a combined 27 runs and 31 hits, host UMass Lowell (19-33, 11-13 America East) held off Binghamton baseball (26-21, 12-11 AE) 14-13 in the regular-season finale Saturday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.

The Bearcats wound up tied for third in the America East standings and will carry the No. 3 seed into the conference tournament, which BU will host beginning Wednesday at the Bearcats Baseball Complex. Binghamton will play No. 6 NJIT in the 5 p.m. game, following the matchup between No. 4 Bryant and No. 5 UMass Lowell. The first two games are single elimination with the two winners advancing to the double-elimination format, which begins Thursday.

On Saturday, the runs were aplenty, with UML building a 9-2 lead before BU chipped away. The Bearcats scored three runs in the seventh, one in the eighth and three in the ninth to pull within a run. Binghamton had the tying run on base in each of the eighth and ninth innings but came up short.

Sophomore third baseman Devan Bade capped off a fantastic final series with two home runs (his sixth and seventh) and five RBI. He ripped a two-run shot in the fifth inning and did it again in the seventh. In the three-game set, Bade went 8-for-14 (.571) and drove in nine runs. Junior first baseman Andrew Tan went 3-for-4 with two RBI and freshman shortstop Mike Stellrecht hit a two-run home run and collected two hits.

Sophomore second baseman Nick Roselli padded his team-leading RBI count with two more. Roselli is hitting .369 and has 59 RBIs and ranks third in the conference in both categories.
