Women’s Soccer Competes to 2-2 Draw at Cornell

Williams ties season-high save total for third time this fall

ITHACA, N.Y. (BUBearcats.com) - A midweek non-conference match ended in a 2-2 draw for the Binghamton University women's soccer team (1-4-3) at Cornell University Wednesday night.

Lexi Vegoda and Paige Luke were the scorers of the night for the Bearcats. Vegoda's goal was her third of the season while Luke's was her second. Vegoda and teammate Olivia McKnight both notched assists in the draw from Luke's score in the second half.

Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Williams tied her season-high saves total for the third time this year with seven. She tallied two saves in the first 45 minutes of play and five in the second half.

BU commanded the first half of play, taking three times as many shots as CU with nine and twice as many on goal. Binghamton recorded three corner kicks while allowing none for the Big Red.

Vegoda got the Bearcats on the clock early, knocking a goal into the bottom right of the net off a penalty kick. BU drew the kick off a Cornell handball that occurred on a Binghamton corner.

The Binghamton offense peppered the CU defense with nine shots, four on goal in the first half. Hannah Mimas took the first two shots on goal, both saved by the Big Red, before Emma Colling had an opportunity that was blocked less than 10 minutes in.

After Vegoda's goal, Victoria McKnight took back-to-back shots of her own that just barely missed the left side of the goal. Vegoda, Hannah Knych and Sophia Garofalo all recorded additional shots before the end of the first half.

The Bearcat defense held the Big Red to just three shots in the first stanza, two of those came on goal but were saved by Williams on the right side.

CU netted a goal less than 10 minutes into the second half off a free kick that was headed into the bottom right corner of the net by Cornell forward Sydney Malaga. The Big Red followed up its first goal with another just 10 minutes later, grabbing the lead at 2-1.

Off assists from Vegoda and McKnight, Luke headed the ball into the middle of the net off a cross to equalize the match with just 12 minutes left in regulation.

Cornell took four more shots to Binghamton's one but neither team was able to take the lead before the end of regulation.

The Bearcats took five shots in the second half of play compared to Cornell's 12, with just one of them being on goal.

The Bearcats stay on the road this weekend against New Hampshire to begin conference play on Sunday, Sept. 17. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
