Men’s Soccer Edged 1-0 at No. 19 Hofstra

Pride nets game-winning goal in the 21st minute

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Bjorn van Gorkom converted a corner kick in the 21st minute, leading Hofstra (7-1-2) to a 1-0 victory over Binghamton (2-6-1) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Tuesday night at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The match marked the second straight  time that the Bearcats have faced a nationally-ranked opponent.

Van Gorkom's game winner was set up by Eliot Goldtrop's corner kick from the right side of the goal. He then headed the ball into the lower left corner of the net.

The Bearcats were out shot 9-1 in the first half but turned things around in the second half with a 6-1 shot advantage. Binghamton nearly tied the match in the 49th minute but had a goal disallowed due to an offsides call.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Root made his second straight start and recorded a pair of first-half saves. In the past two games, he has posted a 0.50 goals against average.

In addition to its 10-7 shot advantage, Hofstra held a slim 3-2 lead in shots on goal.

"I'm proud of how we competed tonight," head coach Paul Marco said. "We were great in the second half and really showed a lot of desire. It was a tight match that came down to a few little things tonight."

Binghamton returns home for a Saturday night America East match against NJIT at 6:07 p.m.

NOTES: Binghamton faced five straight ranked opponents - including then seventh-ranked Ohio State - to begin the 2010 season … the Bearcats have now faced three ranked opponents this year, including then top-ranked Syracuse on Aug. 28 and then No. 18 New Hampshire in their most recent match this past Saturday.
