STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Senior defender
Emma Colling volleyed home a loose ball with 39 seconds left to give visiting Binghamton women's soccer (1-3-2) a 2-2 draw at Wagner (2-3-1) Sunday afternoon at Hameline Field.Â
After a scoreless first half, the teams combined for four goals in the final 40 minutes. Despite owning a shots and corners advantage in the game, BU was staring at a loss in the final minute of the game before Colling converted. With time winding down and the Bearcats pressing forward, senior back
Lexi Vegoda sent a long ball from the left side into the box, where Colling headed it toward goal. A Wagner defender headed it back to the foot of Colling, who struck a clean left-footed volley into the near side from 15 yards out.   Â
Binghamton outshot its hosts 12-9 and had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks, but saw a 1-0 lead erased on back-to-back Seahawks tallies.Â
"Today was a tough matchup against an organized side in Wagner," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We know we be better on the ball in moments and also in how we defend in key transitional times of the game. Had we played with more consistency across the 90 minutes we could have given ourselves a better chance to win. It was great to see how we kept fighting and got a last-minute goal for a road result. We need to keep making improvements on things we know we can be better on as we strive to get to our peak level once conference play begins. But before that we will get ready for a talented Power 5 opponent in Maryland next Sunday at home."
The Bearcats led 1-0 after Vegoda cashed in on a penalty kick for the second straight game. Sophomore forward
Lauren Clark sprung graduate midfielder
Olivia McKnight on a breakaway in the 50th minute and McKnight was taken down in the box, warranting the whistle. Vegoda made good from the spot for her second goal of the season. But six minutes later, Wagner tied it with a rebound goal. Then the Seahawks took a 2-1 lead in the 81st minute on a sharp-angled shot from the right side of the box. Â
Binghamton has a week off before welcoming Big Ten member Maryland to the Bearcats Sports Complex next Sunday.Â
