Women’s Basketball Edged by Maine, 59-56

Denai Bowman, Jadyn Weltz record 14 points apiece in loss

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton women's basketball team (7-13, 2-5) dropped a close America East match-up to Maine (13-8, 6-1), 59-56, on Dr. Bai Lee Court inside the Events Center. 

Despite the loss, BU tallied eight steals, second most this season after grabbing 11 against Bloomsburg, Nov. 6. The Bearcats owned a 8-3 advantage in takeaways over the Black Bears. 

Graduate guard Denai Bowman and redshirt sophomore guard Jadyn Weltz recorded a team-high 14 points and three steals in the loss. Bowman finished 6-11 from the field with a Bearcat best four assists, along with three rebounds and one block. 

Weltz and freshman forward Kendall Bennett added a team-best five rebounds against Maine. Weltz went an almost perfect 7-8 from the charity stripe and sank one three-pointer. 

The showdown between the Bearcats and Black Bears featured five lead changes and two tie scores. 

Binghamton started off strong, earning an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Maine came back with a three-pointer to regain the advantage 12-10 with one minute remaining before Genevieve Coleman closed out the period for BU with a three to lead by one, 13-12. 

The Bearcats continued to build their advantage in the second quarter, adding 15 points to Maine's six. After a three from the Black Bears, Bella Pucci tacked on her own three-pointer to give Binghamton back the lead it would keep for the remainder of the half. BU finished the frame up 10, 28-18. 

Maine regained the lead coming out of the half, earning a 17-5 advantage over the home team in the third quarter. A jumper in the paint from Bowman got the scoring started for Binghamton before the Black Bears went on a 12-0 run to lead 32-30 with 1:24 remaining in the period. 

Three Bearcat free throws and a Maine three ended the third quarter 35-33 in favor of the visitors. 

Offense exploded for both teams in the final period, with Maine outscoring Binghamton 24-23 in the fourth quarter. A three-point and free throw by Weltz put BU within three early on before the Black Bears extended the lead to ten 54-44 with 1:43 in regulation. 

The Bearcats chipped away at the lead, adding 12 points to Maine's five, but were unable to mount the comeback and dropped the contest 59-56 in favor of the Black Bears. 

Next up, Binghamton will take on NJIT on the road, Thursday, Feb. 1. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
