Women's soccer clinches postseason berth with 3-3 tie

Bearcats and UMass Lowell trade three-goal halves; Bing extends unbeaten streak to five

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer clinched the program's sixth straight postseason berth when the Bearcats (6-5-4, 3-2-2 America East) tied visiting UMass Lowell (4-9-3, 3-3-1 AE) 3-3 on Senior Day Sunday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

The tie also extended Binghamton's unbeaten streak to five with one game remaining in the regular season. With Sunday's results, the Bearcats have clinched a top-4 spot and a home quarterfinal game next Sunday, Nov. 3.

The Bearcats were dominant in the first half and staked themselves to a 3-0 lead halfway through the game. But the River Hawks responded with a three-goal second half and tied the game with 2:37 left.

" We were pleased with how we played in the first 45 minutes," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "Getting a 3-0 lead against a team that came in with three straight shutouts was very impressive. In the second half we came out on our heels and a good team like UMass Lowell took advantage of it. We just need to be better at finishing a game out with confidence we know we have. But we still got a result and it gets us into postseason, which is another great accomplishment."

Pregame, Binghamton celebrated its nine seniors: Erin Hogan, Alex Marsteller, Isabella Martillo, Hannah Mimas, Maria Poulos, Nicole Rago, Hailey Roberts, Mackenzie Ryder and Kaitlyn Williams.

When the game started, the Bearcats sizzled. In the ninth minute, junior Lauren Clark's relentless pursuit led to the opening goal. A River Hawks defender sent a ball back to the keeper but Clark swooped in, deflected the clear attempt and collected it near the endline. She fed freshman midfielder Anna Buckwalter at the top of the box and Buckwalter delivered a 22-yard left-footer to the top right corner for a quick 1-0 lead. It was Buckwalter's fifth goal of the season, which leads all conference rookies.

Less than five minutes later, Binghamton made it 2-0 when senior forward Hannah Mimas sent a cross to the far post, where it was knocked in by sophomore back Megan Baker for her first collegiate goal. Then in the 25th minute, senior striker Mackenzie Ryder bumped the lead to 3-0 when she tapped in a rebound on the doorstep after junior back Allison Falvo made a strong run down the left and sent the initial shot on goal. It was Ryder's fifth goal of the season.

Binghamton held a 9-1 shots advantage in the first half.

But the River Hawks rallied in the second half. They scored goals in the 49th and 53rd minutes to make it 3-2 and kept up consistent pressure. UMass Lowell got the equalizer with just 2:37 remaining.

Binghamton closes out the regular season Thursday night at UAlbany.
