Women's soccer season ends in semifinals 3-1

Ryder scores early goal but UNH tallies three straight goals to advance

DURHAM, N.H. - In an America East semifinal, host and second-seeded New Hampshire (12-4-1) scored three straight goals to defeat third-seeded Binghamton women's soccer (7-6-5), 3-1 Thursday night at Wildcat Stadium. The loss snapped the Bearcats' seven-game unbeaten streak and ended the program's quest for a third trip to the finals in the last five years.

Binghamton jumped ahead 1-0 on a 10th-minute goal from Mackenzie Ryder. But UNH countered with goals in the 32nd and 44th minutes and finished off the scoring with an insurance goal in the 66th minute. Meanwhile, the top defensive team in the conference limited the Bearcats to two shots on goal.

Ryder scored her seventh goal of the season when she struck a one-timer from eight yards out after a precise feed from senior midfielder Isabella Martillo on the right.

But UNH struck for two goals in less than 12 minutes late in the half to carry a 2-1 lead into the locker room. The Wildcats held a 10-3 shots margin in the opening half.

Binghamton began to look stronger at the start of the second half and registered five shots and five corner kicks in the final period but couldn't find a second goal.

"Congratulations to UNH on advancing," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We didn't play to the level we needed to in the latter stages of the first half. We had a terrific start but then individually and as a team needed to perform better with increased pressure. We did respond with a better second half but it wasn't enough in the end. I am proud of this group overall for the season we had. We made a number of steps with a squad that had season-ending injuries and new personnel. The culture was strong and this team represented Binghamton in a classy manner. Thanks to all who supported us and we will be back stronger next season and hungry to compete once again."

Ryder and junior center back Brooke Herber were named to the All-Championship team.
