Men’s Soccer Edged 1-0 at UMBC in AE Quarterfinals

Retrievers net game-winning goal in 84th minute

VESTAL, N.Y. – Hans Nesheim scored in the 84th minute, lifting third-seeded UMBC (8-6-4) to a 1-0 win over sixth-seeded Binghamton (8-7-4) in an America East quarterfinal match on Saturday evening at the Retriever Soccer Park. The game ended the season for the Bearcats - which featured their highest win total since 2015 as well as their third straight trip to the conference tournament.

Nesheim's goal, which was his first of the season, came off a corner kick and was set up by teammates Tyquan Stroud and Lasse Kemp. Nesheim was stationed by the far right post and headed the ball into the net.

Binghamton refused to go quietly after Neshiem's goal and fired two shots during the last four minutes of regulation. The first shot was saved by UMBC goalkeeper Emigdio Lopez and the second shot hit the crossbar.

UMBC had a chance to pad the lead in the final seconds of the match but graduate student goalkeeper Dylan McDermott made a save from close range.

"I am so proud of this team with how they played tonight and how they competed all season," head coach Paul Marco said. "We have a resilient group and they are great people to work with. Our program is in a good place going forward but we are really going to miss our nine graduating players."

UMBC out shot Binghamton 9-8 for the match, with its final shot being the goal by Neshiem. The Bearcats had a 6-3 shot advantage in the first half and hit the post on one instance.

McDermott finished with three saves in his final match as a Bearcat. Also playing in his final college match was acting captain Carlo Cavalar.

The remaining graduating players include Ramsey Tilgner, Billy Clark, Mael Lopes, Tom Cohen, Chris Comber, Charlie Kaldor and Sean Fitzgerald.

NOTE: UMBC advances to play at Vermont on Wednesday in the America East semifinals. Bryant defeated NJIT 4-0 in the other quarterfinal match on Saturday and will head to New Hampshire on Wednesday for the other semifinal match.
