Baseball drops game at Houston 8-2

Bade collects two hits, RBI and BU matches Cougars in hits but comes up short in Game 2 of series

HOUSTON, Texas – University of Houston (2-0) broke open a one-run game with two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to defeat Binghamton baseball (0-2) 8-2 Saturday afternoon at Schroeder Park.

The Bearcats trailed 3-2 and had the tying run on second in the seventh but couldn't push him across. The Big 12 member Cougars then countered with a scoring barrage in their final two frames. Binghamton matched Houston in the hit column but went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Junior third baseman Devan Bade went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Senior first baseman Andrew Tan also had a pair of hits.

The Bearcats struck first with a run in the second. Tan led off with a triple to right center and scored on an RBI groundout from sophomore shortstop Mike Stellrecht.

Houston tied it with a run in the third and then took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the fourth. After two scoreless frames, BU got one back in the seventh. With two outs, senior right fielder Mike Gunning singled down the left field line and Bade delivered a run-scoring double to right.

Sophomore starter Ryan Bates worked 4.0 innings and allowed five hits and three runs with three strikeouts. Sophomore Dan McAliney had the most success of four BU relievers. He went 2.0 innings and allowed just one hit.

The teams finish their three-game weekend set at noon Sunday. Senior transfer Nelson Berkwich makes his first start as a Bearcat.
