Baseball drops series finale at UNCG 6-3

Bearcats outhit Spartans but fall short of sweeping weekend series

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Host UNC Greensboro (5-2) snapped a 2-2 tie with a sixth-inning grand slam and defeated Binghamton baseball (2-4) 6-3 Sunday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Bearcats, who won on Friday and Saturday, had the edge in hits but fell short of completing a weekend sweep of their SoCon hosts.

Binghamton led 2-0 after single runs in the second and third innings. But UNCG tied it with runs in the third and fifth innings and then delivered the big blow with two out in the sixth after three straight walks set the table.

The Bearcats were held off the board for five straight innings before getting one run back in the ninth. An infield single by freshman second baseman Todd Abraham and RBI triple inside the third base bag by sophomore pinch hitter Mike Stellrecht gave BU life in their final at-bat. But a sure RBI hit by pinch hitter Logan Haskell was instead snared by the UNCG shortstop and an ensuing groundout ended the threat and game.

Abraham went 2-for-4 with an RBI and senior right fielder Mike Gunning completed his superb weekend with two more hits. The Bearcats outhit UNCG 8-7, though all but one were singles. Abraham delivered a two-out RBI hit in the second to give BU the early 1-0 lead. In the third, senior first baseman Eric Madenberg and senior center fielder Tommy Reifler hit back-to-back singles and senior left fielder Christian Perez plated Madenberg with a sacrifice fly.

Senior starter Nelson Berkwich scattered four hits and two runs in 4.1 innings. He struck out five. Freshman Hayden Tarsia had the most success of four BU relievers. He tossed 1.1 scoreless innings and struck out three.

Binghamton returns to North Carolina next weekend for three games against three different opponents, beginning with a Friday test against No. 1-ranked Wake Forest (6-1).

NOTE
Gunning went 7-for-13 (.538) with three home runs and seven RBI in the three games. He's hitting .391 with a 1.374 OPS to start the season.
