Baseball walks off NJIT on Corry grand slam

Bearcats prevail 7-5 in 10 innings; Corry delivers in clutch with walk-off blast, five RBI

VESTAL, N.Y. - Senior second baseman Isaiah Corry blasted a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning lifting Binghamton baseball (7-9, 2-0 America East) to a 7-5 come-from-behind win over NJIT (5-12, 0-2 AE) Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Stadium. It was BU's second walk-off in the last three games and kept the Bearcats unbeaten early in conference play.

Down 5-3 in the 10th, BU put its first three runners on to set the table. Senior catcher Kevin Reilly led off with a single and freshman first baseman Conner Griffin followed with a double, putting runners on second and third. After a walk to sophomore shortstop Mike Stellrecht, Corry stepped in and took a 1-2 pitch well over the wall in right field, setting off a wild celebration. Two innings earlier, Corry delivered a clutch two-out, RBI single to tie the game at 3-3. He wound up 2-for-4 with a career-high five RBI.

"Our pitchers did really well today so I was just happy that the hitters could come through at the end," Corry said. "I was just trying to put a ball in the air and hit something hard and it wound up going over the fence. It was incredible."

The Bearcats battled after falling behind 3-0 early and its pitching unit kept them in it with a school-record 20 strikeouts. Sophomore starter Ryan Bates fanned nine in 5.0 innings, sophomore Dan McAliney had three in 2.0 innings and senior Justin Rosner struck out the side in each of his two innings. Freshman Jackson Mitchell (W) added two in the 10th inning for the final team total.

Bates struck out four straight batters in the first and second innings but NJIT capitalized on a solo home run to open the game and a two-run shot in the second to jump ahead. The Bearcats got one back in the fourth, another in the sixth and then after advancing the tying run to third base in three straight innings, BU came through in the eighth to tie the game at 3-3.

With two out in the eighth, Stellrecht drove a triple to right center. Corry followed by sending a 1-0 pitch down the left field line for an RBI single. Neither team scored in the ninth, setting a 10th frame that began with the Highlanders scoring twice on two singles and a walk to take a 5-3 lead.

Griffin went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Stellrecht had two hits and an RBI and Reilly, junior left fielder Logan Haskell and junior DH Evin Sullivan had two hits apiece. The Bearcats totaled 15 hits but left 11 stranded, keeping the game in doubt until Corry's blast.

The teams finish up the three-game weekend set with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday.
