BALTIMORE, Md. - Host UMBC (8-11, 2-0 America East) dealt Binghamton baseball (7-12, 2-3 AE) its first America East doubleheader sweep in two years, 2-0 and 11-9 at Alumni Field.
In the seven-inning opener, BU was held to two hits and the Retrievers scored the game's only two runs in the first inning before both teams put up zeros the rest of the way. Senior pitcher
Gabe Driscoll (L, 2-3) scattered five hits and two runs over 6.0 innings. He struck out seven and walked just one. The Bearcats' best chance to score was in the third inning when sophomore shortstop
Mike Stellrecht led off with a double and senior second baseman
Isaiah Corry walked. But a double play grounder and strikeout at the top of the order squandered the chance.
In the nine-inning nightcap, BU led 5-1 before UMBC rallied in the middle innings. The Retrievers scored four runs in the fifth, one in the sixth to take the lead and then added five runs in the seventh. The Bearcats got back into the game with three runs in the eighth and added another in the ninth to tighten the final score.
Binghamton brought the tying run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings but missed the key hit.
Senior outfielders
Mike Gunning and
Tommy Reifler had three hits apiece and senior catcher
Kevin Reilly collected two RBI.
The teams will wait out the pending rain in Baltimore on Saturday and hope to finish the three-game series with a Sunday afternoon game.
