VESTAL, N.Y. – Sophomore pitcher
Brianna Roberts tossed a one-hit shutout and freshman catcher
Elisa Allen homered and drove in five runs, powering Binghamton (17-10) to a 2-0, 13-3 sweep over Le Moyne (8-18) in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The victories marked the Bearcats' first home games of the season.
Roberts was the star of the first game, as she allowed only three base runners through 7.0 innings. She struck out six batters and raised her record to 6-5. Only a one-out single in the top of the seventh inning by McKenzie Bergdoll prevented her from recording the no hitter.
Allen, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 (.500) during the doubleheader. In the second game, she drove in a career-high four runs. Sophomore outfielder
Bella Farina went 4-for-6 (.667) on the day, homered, drove in three runs and scored a team-best four times.
Leading the Bearcats in hitting for the day, however, was senior first baseman
Allison L'Amoreaux, who was 3-for-4 (.750), reached base four times, scored twice and had an RBI double.
"After the first game, we talked about going up to the plate with a lot of confidence," head coach
Jess Bump said. "We were pressing in the first game but I was happy with how we responded after that."
In the opener, the Bearcats got all the runs they needed in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Farina led off the frame with a home run and Roberts followed with a triple. One batter later, Roberts scored on a sacrifice fly by Allen.
Laura Bennett of Le Moyne allowed just two runs on five hits and struck out five batters in the first game. Her record, however, fell to 4-9.
In the nightcap, Allen had the big blow in a seven-run bottom of the first inning that gave the Bearcats a 7-1 cushion. She belted a three-run home run well over the left field fence during that frame. Earlier in that inning, Roberts and Farina had RBI singles.
Binghamton got three more runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 10-1. Redshirt junior third baseman
Shelby Carvalho drilled a two-run double during that frame and L'Amoreaux doubled home the other run.
One inning later, Farina belted RBI double and later scored on a single by Allen. By then the lead was 12-1 and the Bearcats had more than enough runs to finish off the game in five innings.
Freshman pitcher
Delaney Glover went the distance in the second game and is now 2-0. The loss was tagged to Arianna Exarchacki, whose record dropped to 2-6.
Redshirt junior outfielder
Brianna Santos finished the day 3-for-5 (.600) while Roberts was 2-for-5 (.400). Each of them scored a pair of runs.
As a team, Binghamton hit .370 during the two games.
Binghamton hosts defending America East champion UMBC in a three-game series this weekend, starting with a 4 p.m. single game on Friday.
