Baseball splits doubleheader with VMI

BU wins opener 6-2, loses nightcap 5-3; Sullivan goes combined 6-for-8

LEXINGTON, Va. – Binghamton baseball (4-8) split a doubleheader with host VMI (7-9) Friday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium. The Bearcats took the opener 6-2 and VMI won the nightcap 5-3.

In Game 1, BU jumped ahead with two runs in the second inning. Senior DH Andrew Tan led off with single and sophomore shortstop Mike Stellrecht belted a 1-out RBI triple to right center. Freshman Todd Abraham followed with an RBI groundout, scoring Stellrecht for a 2-0 lead.

The Bearcats added two more runs in the seventh. Graduate first baseman Sam Haney led off with a solo home run – his second of the season. Then with two out, junior left fielder Logan Haskell and junior third baseman Devan Bade hit back-to-back doubles to push BU's lead to 4-0. After the Keydets got one back in the bottom of the seventh, the Bearcats added two error-aided runs in the eighth to pad their lead. VMI plated a run in the ninth to finish the scoring.

Senior Gabe Driscoll (W) scattered five hits and one run over 7.0 innings to notch his first win of the season. He struck out five before giving way to classmate Justin Rosner, who worked the final two innings.

Junior catcher Evin Sullivan went 3-for-4 and eight different Bearcats had either a hit or an RBI.

In Game 2, VMI snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run home run in the eighth inning and held off a BU charge in the ninth after the Bearcats put two on with one out and had the tying run on the bases.

Sophomore starter Ryan Bates took a no-hitter and a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning before the Keydets used a two-run home run and three hits to jump ahead 3-1. In the sixth, senior right fielder Mike Gunning produced a long ball of his own – a two-run shot to tie the game. It was Gunning's sixth home run of the season, second-most in the America East.

Sullivan completed his excellent day with a second 3-for-4 showing at the plate.

With anticipated rain on Saturday, the teams will take a day off before concluding the series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
