Men's tennis blanks Stonehill in NEC quarterfinals

Top-seeded Bearcats advance to Saturday afternoon semifinals against No. 5 Le Moyne

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Top-seeded Binghamton men's tennis (14-9) blanked No. 8 Stonehill (6-14) 4-0 in an NEC Championship quarterfinal match late Friday night at the Mercer County Tennis Courts. The Bearcats' long-awaited debut in the NEC tournament didn't start until 10:30 p.m. after rain forced most of the day's 10 matches indoors and a lengthy delay ensued.

With the win - BU's seventh in its last eight matches - the Bearcats advance to Saturday's semifinals, where they will face No. 5 Le Moyne, which defeated No. 4 LIU 4-2.

Binghamton captured the doubles point in just over a half-hour and then rattled off three singles wins to halt the match just after 12:10 a.m.

Junior Kyle Weekes led the charge in singles with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4. Sophomore No. 2 Ronin Lotlikar notched his 24th singles win of the season with a straight-set triumph. Binghamton clinched the win when sophomore No. 5 James McPherson posted a 6-4, 6-1 win.

"It was a long day," head coach Nick Zieziula said. "But I thought the guys did well responding and being ready to compete when we finally got going. We got down a break at second doubles but our third doubles played a clean match and No. 1 played well, which is tough to do when you don't have much of a warm-up and have been sitting around all day. In singles, Kyle was outstanding today ... he attacked and volleyed well and played a really clean, focused match. We are excited to be moving on ... we'll get some rest and be ready for another battle with Le Moyne on Saturday. We will need to be dialed in right from the start because those guys can really play."

Binghamton will face Le Moyne for the third time this season, having posted two wins over the Dolphins in the regular season – each by a narrow 4-3 score.
