Baseball blanks UAlbany 4-0 for second straight win

Roselli slams home run; Berkwich, McAliney combine for four-hit shutout

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (15-19, 5-9 America East) built a first-inning lead for the second straight day and Bearcat pitchers kept visiting UAlbany (5-26, 3-10 AE) off the board in a 4-0 win Saturday afternoon at Bearcats Baseball Stadium.

In notching their second straight win of the series, BU pitching shined again. Senior starter Nelson Berkwich (W, 3-4) and sophomore reliever Dan McAliney (save) combined for a four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts. Binghamton pitchers have now kept UAlbany off the board for 18 of 19 innings this weekend.

In the first inning, senior center fielder Tommy Reifler led off with a walk and junior second baseman Nick Roselli followed with an infield single. Junior catcher Evin Sullivan delivered an RBI single through the right side for a quick 1-0 lead. An ensuing wild pitch made it 2-0.

The Bearcats doubled their lead in the fifth inning. Roselli led off with a solo bomb - his third of the season. He took a 2-0 pitch deep over the wall in right, some 425+ feet. After Sullivan singled and senior right fielder Mike Gunning drew a walk, junior third baseman Devan Bade moved them over with a sacrifice bunt. Senior first baseman Andrew Tan then sent a sacrifice fly to right to score Sullivan with the fourth and final run.

Berkwich worked 5.1 innings and limited UAlbany to three hits. He retired the first nine in order and struck out six before giving way to McAliney, who looked sharp in his 3.2 innings. McAliney stifled the Great Danes on one hit with two strikeouts.

Binghamton's defense was clean throughout. Sophomore shortstop Mike Stellrecht made a nice putout in the fifth after UAlbany put two players on. Berkwich then stranded two runners with a pair of strikeouts. Stellrecht then started a double play in the eighth.

The teams will close out the weekend with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Bearcats will throw senior graduate right-hander Spencer Howell.
