Women’s Lacrosse Outlasts UMBC in Overtime

Bearcats clinch playoff berth, tie for first place in AE standings

BALTIMORE, Md. (BUBearcats.com) - Gabriella Meli's game winning goal in overtime sent the Binghamton women's lacrosse team (9-6, 4-1) past UMBC (9-5, 4-2), 14-13, Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

The win moves BU into a tie for first place in the America East standings and cliches the Bearcats third straight AE playoff appearance. The victory also extends Binghamton's win streak to five, its longest of the season.

BU dominated in the draw circle with three times as many draw controls wins as the Retrievers', 21-8. Hayley Weltner recorded a season-high 12 draw controls in the circle followed by Emma Blloshmi's six and Gretel Cassell's two.

Seven Bearcats found netting for BU in the victory, led by Madison Murphy's five points (3G, 2A). Both Kristen Scheidel (2G, 1A) and Olivia Muscolino (3G) chipped in three points apiece. Weltner (1G, 1A), Blloshmi (2G), Carla Curth (1G, 1A) and Meli (2G) added two points each for Binghamton.

UMBC started off the afternoon's scoring with a goal less than a minute into play. BU responded with four straight goals, two coming back-to-back from Scheidel, to grab a 4-1 lead. The home team recorded two more scores in the first frame before Blloshmi and Meli found the back of the net to finish the first 15 ahead, 6-4.

The Retrievers mounted a comeback in the second quarter with three consecutive scores to tie up the game at six in the final minute of play. With 10 seconds left, Murphy netted a buzzer beater from the eight-meter mark to give the Bearcats a 7-6 advantage heading into halftime.

UMBC came out of the break on top and posted the first goal of the second half to tie the contest at seven. Both the Bearcats and then the Retrievers traded back-to-back goals next to even the score at nine. Murphy and Weltner registered scores with less than 1:30 left to put BU up 11-9 at the end of the third frame.

The Retrievers grabbed the first goal of the quarter once again in the fourth before Muscolino converted on a free position attempt to increase BU's lead to two, 12-10. UMBC's Katana Nelson went back-to-back to even the playing field once again for the home team at 12-12.

Muscolino found the netting next for BU, the second time in the fourth quarter, to grab an 13-12 advantage for the visiting team. Not backing down, UMBC put up another score at 3:36 left to tie up the contest at 13. With just over a minute to go, goalkeeper Sofia Salgado stopped two crucial Retriever shots to send Binghamton into its second overtime contest of the season.

With a draw control win, Weltner secured the offensive start for the Bearcats to begin the overtime period. UMBC's Grace Bruce committed a foul between the 30-meter lines next, sending her to the penalty box and giving BU a woman-up scoring opportunity. Off a short pass from Curth, Meli flicked in a game-winning goal over the top right shoulder of the Retrievers goalkeeper to solidify the 14-13 victory for the Bearcats.

Next up, Binghamton hosts Bryant in its final game of the season, Saturday, April 27, at 1p.m. BU will honor its 10 graduating seniors before the start of the contest.
