Baseball late runs sink Le Moyne 10-3

Bearcats plate six in eighth inning to pull away; Gunning belts 12th home run

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (13-15) scored six runs in the eighth inning to pull away from visiting Le Moyne (12-15) 10-3 in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at Bearcats Baseball Stadium.

The teams traded single runs throughout the game and BU led 4-3 before capitalizing on two Dolphin errors and two hit batters to score six add-on runs in the decisive eighth. The Bearcats totaled 15 hits but stranded nine through the first seven innings before finally breaking through with a multi-run frame.

Senior right fielder Mike Gunning produced one of those single-run innings when he belted his conference-leading 12th home run with one out in the fifth. Gunning took an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left to stretch BU's lead to 4-2. In the process, he took over the conference lead in both home runs and RBI (31). Gunning is just four away from tying BU's season record for home runs (16). He also added an RBI in the eighth.

Junior DH Evin Sullivan and graduate first baseman Sam Haney each had two hits and an RBI. Senior first baseman Andrew Tan delivered a two-run double to close out the flurry in the eighth. Senior center fielder Tommy Reifler, junior second baseman Nick Roselli and junior third baseman Devan Bade had two hits apiece. Bade also provided a defensive gem with a diving stop and force at third in the third inning to limit a Le Moyne uprising.

Junior left fielder Logan Haskell (hit, RBI) also had a defensive highlight with a catch and throw-to-the-plate for a double play in the seventh. Haskell's throw cut down the tying run and kept BU ahead 4-3.

Freshman starter Hayden Tarsia began a contingent of five BU pitchers that held the Dolphins to three runs on six hits. Making his third collegiate start, Tarsia worked 3.0 innings and allowed just two hits with three strikeouts.

Binghamton (3-6 AE) next heads to Smithfield, R.I. for an America East weekend series at first-place Bryant (8-1), beginning with a 3 p.m. game on Friday.
