Softball Finishes Third at AE Tournament

Bearcats lose 6-3 to UAlbany, 2-1 to UMass Lowell in nine innings

ORONO, Maine – After a banner year that included a share of the America East regular-season title, Binghamton's softball season concluded with a third-place finish at the conference tournament on Friday afternoon at the Maine Softball Complex. The Bearcats (33-18) lost 6-3 to UAlbany (32-12) in the winners' bracket and then lost 2-1 in nine innings to UMass Lowell (17-28) in an elimination game.

In the opener, the Bearcats fell behind 6-1 after three innings against the Great Danes but nearly came all the way back. Redshirt junior shortstop Gabby Guerrero doubled home a run in the top of the fourth inning, trimming the deficit to 6-2.

The Bearcats quickly loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning with no outs. Redshirt junior outfielder Lindsey Walter scored on a ground out, bringing Binghamton to within 6-3. The Great Danes however, were able to get the final two outs of the frame. The tying run was left at the plate when the game ended.

Wendi Hammond went the distance for the Great Danes, raising her record to 23-8. The loss was tagged to sophomore pitcher Olivia Kennedy, whose record fell to 9-4.

Guerrero finished a perfect 3-for-3 against the Great Danes while Walter went 2-for-3 and scored twice.

Against UMass Lowell, the Bearcats quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning against Riley White, who was pitching in her second straight game. The only run of the frame that they scored, however, was a bases-loaded walk drawn by sophomore designated player Emma Lawson.

In the previous game, White allowed one run on three hits through 7.0 innings as the River Hawks eliminated Bryant 2-1. She then went the full nine innings against the Bearcats, scattering one run on eight hits and striking out seven batters.

The River Hawks tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Morgan Fisher. They finally pulled ahead in the top of the ninth inning when Elizabeth Frederick doubled home a run.

From there, White set the Bearcats down in order in the bottom of the ninth inning, raising her record to 14-9. Taking the loss was redshirt junior Lindsey Walter, whose record drops to 0-2.

Walter and redshirt junior outfielder Brianna Santos each went 2-for-4 in the nightcap. The two hits by Santos were the 100th and 101st of her two-year career at Binghamton.

The only other time in program history that the Bearcats have played a nine-inning game in the America East Tournament was when the Bearcats lost 2-1 to UAlbany. That marked the Bearcats' first-ever America East Tournament game.

Walter finished the America East Tournament 5-for-9 (.555) while Lawson was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Guerrero was 3-for-8 (.375) while sophomore outfielder Bella Farina, meanwhile, was 3-for-9 (.333) with an RBI.

The 33 wins by the Bearcats during the 2024 season represents the third-best total in program history. Only the 1997 team (37) and 2016 squad (34) racked up more wins.

Binghamton's 50 home runs this season tied the program record that was set in 2011. The Bearcats' 83 doubles, meanwhile, shattered the 1997 mark of 73 doubles.

NOTES: Walter and Lawson were named to the America East All-Tournament Team. It marks the first such appearance for both of them.
