Women’s Lacrosse Advances to AE Championship Final

Bearcats defeat UMBC 13-8 to head to second straight conference final

ALBANY, N.Y. (BUBearcats.com) - The Binghamton women's lacrosse team (11-6, 5-1) defeated UMBC (9-6, 4-2) to advance to its second straight America East Championship Final, Friday afternoon at UAlbany's John Fallon Field.

The victory marks the second postseason victory in program history for BU in four appearances. The Bearcats first tournament win came in last season's, 12-10, semifinal win over Vermont. The win also extended the team's victory streak to seven, its longest of the season.

Binghamton led the contest's offense, owning a 23-16 advantage in shots on goal. BU edged UMBC in the draw circle with a 13-12 lead in draw controls. The Bearcats also converted on 3-7 of their free position shots compared to the Retrievers' 1-2.

Olivia Muscolino recorded a team-best five points on three goals and two assists for her twelfth hat-trick of the season. Kristen Scheidel and Carla Curth followed with four points apiece for Binghamton.

Madison Murphy chipped in her tenth hat-trick of the spring with three goals. Emma Conroy, Hayley Weltner and Gabriella Meli finished out scoring for the Bearcats with one goal apiece.

After the first five minutes of play went scoreless, UMBC found the back of the net first to grab the early lead. Curth notched the first Bearcat goal to tie it up before the Retrievers went back-to-back to go up 3-1 with 8:25 remaining in the first quarter.

Muscolino put up her own back-to-back scores next to even the score at three apiece. Both teams registered two more to finish out the frame tied 4-4.

Binghamton held UMBC to just one goal in the second quarter while scoring three themselves to grab a 7-5 advantage. Scheidel gave BU its first lead of the game with 4:21 left in the stanza, a lead which the Retrievers would not overcome for the rest of the contest.

UMBC registered the first goal of the second half to cut the Bearcat advantage to one before Murphy found netting to bring Binghamton ahead, 8-6. The Retrievers posted one more in the third quarter before Murphy and Muscolino completed their hat-tricks to give BU a 10-7 lead.

The Bearcat defense held UMBC to one goal in the final 24 minutes of play while Weltner, Meli and Scheidel finished out scoring for Binghamton to claim the 13-8 victory.

Up next, BU faces hosts UAlbany in the America East Championship Final, Sunday, March 5. First draw is slated for 10 a.m. on ESPNU.
