Alex Musial drove in three runs and sophomore designated player
Emma Lawson had a pair of RBI, leading Binghamton (32-16, 14-6 AE) to a 10-2, five-inning victory over UMass Lowell (16-27, 8-11 AE) in an America East softball game on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory - which was preceded by program's the annual Senior Day Ceremony - the Bearcats clinched a share of the America East regular season title and will carry the No. 2 seed into the upcoming conference tournament.
This marks the third time in program history that Binghamton has won an America East regular-season championship. The Bearcats won the title outright in 2016 and 2017. Binghamton joined the America East Conference in April 2001.
UAlbany also finished with a 14-6 conference record, having defeated Maine 6-0 earlier on Saturday. The Great Danes hold the tiebreaker over the Bearcats, having won two out of three games in their series April 20-21.
As the No. 2 seed in the upcoming America East Tournament, Binghamton has a first-round bye for the second straight year. The Bearcats' second-round opponent will be either No. 3 Bryant or No. 6 Maine in on Thursday. The double-elimination event is being hosted by the Black Bears.
Both Lawson and Musial played pivotal roles in the Bearcats' five-run bottom of the first inning that broke open a scoreless game on Saturday. Lawson singled home the first run of the frame and scored two batters later on a two-run double by Musial.
Up 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, Binghamton reeled off five more runs. Lawson and Musial each singled home a run during that frame.
Senior pitcher
Allison L'Amoreaux then finished off the game in the top of the fifth inning. Her record improves to 13-5. Taking the loss was Jen Slanovec, who is now 0-3.
Freshman second baseman
Maddy Dodig and senior shortstop
Gabby Guerrero each finished the game 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
L'Amoreaux scored a game-high two runs and was credited with an RBI when she was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning with the bases loaded. For the weekend, she was 3-for-8 (.375) with a home run and three RBI. L'Amoreaux's on-base percentage was .500 during the series and she now has a team-best 32 RBI for the season.
Lawson finished the weekend with a team-best .444 batting average (4-for-9) while Dodig went 3-for-7 (.429).
The Bearcats' 32 wins remains the third-highest total in program history. The 1997 squad won 37 games followed by the 2016 team, which recorded 34 victories.
