Women's soccer earns 1-1 draw at St. Bonaventure

Mimas ties game with brilliant goal in 66th minute; Bearcats hold Bona to one second-half shot

OLEAN, N.Y. – Visiting Binghamton women's soccer (1-1-1) used a second-half goal from senior forward Hannah Mimas to forge a 1-1 tie at St. Bonaventure (0-3-1) Sunday afternoon at Marra Athletics Complex

The Bearcats held a 10-4 shots advantage and used a season-high seven corner kicks to create dangerous moments throughout. But head coach Neel Bhattacharjee's squad trailed 1-0 before getting the equalizer.

Binghamton had the edge in possession (55%) and chances in the first 45 minutes but the Bonnies cashed in their best opportunity in the 29th minute. An attack down the left side led to a through ball in the middle and an eight-yard finish to the far corner.

In the second half, the Bearcats pressed with three corner kicks in the first seven minutes and finally broke through.

Mimas evened the score with a long run and great finish in the 66th minute – her second goal of the season. The Bearcats built up from the left with junior defender back Brooke Herber deftly redirecting a ball out to Mimas on the sideline. Mimas began a 30-yard run with speed, cut inside past a central defender and launched a rifle from 20 yards into the top netting.

Mimas then had a chance for a winner with 1:03 left when she again broke in alone on the left side. But her nine-yard shot past the rushing keeper and headed toward the far corner trickled just wide.

The Bearcats outshot St. Bona 6-1 in the second half.

"Today's match was one where we can be pleased with many things but left with some disappointment in the eventual result," Bhattacharjee said. "I'm happy to see how quickly we bounced back after an unfortunate result the previous game and kept our focus, even after going down a goal. We had good play in stretches of the first half and then the second half was a very strong 45 minutes, where we created numerous high quality chances that resulted in a good goal and probably unlucky not to have added more goals for a win. But we know if we play at that high level over a full match good things will come our way."

Binghamton plays its home opener Thursday afternoon when it welcomes Monmouth to the Bearcats Sports Complex.
