Women’s Basketball Wins 60-50 at UMBC

Goode scores 15 points, Bennett adds 11 points

BALTIMORE, Md. - Junior guard Kaia Goode scored a game-high 15 points and sophomore forward Kendall Bennett added 11 points, lifting Binghamton (9-6, 1-1 AE) to a 60-50 win over UMBC (7-6, 0-1 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Chesapeake Insurance Arena. The victory capped off the Bearcats' two-game road trip to start conference play.

Goode was 5-for-8 from the floor - including a three-point field goal - and made four of her five free throws. She also tied for the team lead with four assists, grabbed a pair of rebounds and added a steal.

Bennett, meanwhile, was 5-of-6 from the field and also recorded six rebounds and a block. In the past two games, she has averaged 11.5 points per contest.

Bennett scored five of her points during a 13-1 run over a span of 3:50 that put the Bearcats up 31-21 with 1:41 left before halftime. The Retrievers, however, scored the final five points of the period, trimming the deficit to 31-26.

In the opening 4:30 of the third period, Binghamton went on a 12-2 blitz to open up a 43-28 lead. Five different Bearcat players scored during that stretch, prompting UMBC to call a timeout.

The Retrievers pulled to within 50-41 on a jumper by Alaina Williams with 6:39 left in regulation. From there, however, the Bearcats went on a game-sealing 10-1 run to take a 60-42 lead with 2:12 left to go. Junior guard Meghan Casey swished a pair of three-point field goals during that stretch.

"It was a hard-fought game," head coach Mary Grimes said. "We've talked a lot about coming out strong in the third period and I am really proud of our squad. We were able to withstand their runs and continue to execute our offense."

Sophomore forward Leah Middleton finished with eight points while Casey and junior forward Camryn Fauria each chipped in six points. Fauria also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Redshirt junior guard Jadyn Weltz tied Goode for the team lead with four assists. She also finished with three points, three rebounds and a pair of steals.

Jordan Lewis led UMBC with 11 points. Williams finished with a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with six points. The Retrievers also got a game-high seven assists from Carmen Yanez.

Binghamton shot an even 40 percent for the game (20-of-50) and finished with seven three-point field goals. Defensively, the Bearcats held the Retrievers to just 35 percent shooting (18-of-51).

At the free throw line, Binghamton was 13-of-15 (86 percent).

Binghamton returns home for three straight games at the Events Center, starting with a 6:07 p.m. matchup on Thursday against defending America East champion Maine.
