LOWELL, Mass. - Sophomore forward
Alexus Worrell scored in the game's third minute and Binghamton women's soccer (9-1-3, 4-0-1 America East) stifled UMass Lowell (4-5-3, 1-2-1 AE) the rest of the way for a 1-0 road win Sunday afternoon at rainy Cushing Field. With the victory, the Bearcats extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games (7-0-3) and kept atop the conference standings with three games remaining in the regular season.
Binghamton controlled play from the opening whistle and Worrell earned a corner kick with some 1-v-1 work on the right side. Sophomore midfielder
Anna Buckwalter sent a perfect ball right into a crowd of players at the goal line. After the River Hawks keeper couldn't control the catch, Worrell tapped in the loose ball on the doorstep for her third goal of the season - all game-winners.Â
The Bearcats outshot UML 7-1 in the half and had a sizable possession advantage.Â
"The match couldn't have starter any better with an early goal and the high quality we had in our first-half possession," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "The second half was a bit more up and down, which we knew would be the case with UMass Lowell's talent and adjustments. So we need to keep the level high while a team is chasing our lead. In the end we are very pleased to take three points on the road and now have to recover and then prep for what will be a big two-game weekend coming up."
In the second half, Binghamton nearly had an insurance goal when junior center back
Sophia Garofalo struck a 12-yard loose ball that was headed for goal before it was saved off the line by a UML defender in the 58th minute. Conference leading scorer
Jahkaya Davis nearly added to her total in the 80th minute but her hard shot from inside the box was saved with a foot.Â
Binghamton withstood some late pressure from the River Hawks but earned the team's third shutout of the season - first in league play. The Bearcats wound up with a 13-8 shots edge and created seven corner kicks.
Returning to the lineup after missing a game with injury, junior keeper
Rebecca Kessler needed to make just two saves in notching the shutout.
The Bearcats host UAlbany Thursday night at the BSC.Â
NOTE
