VESTAL, N.Y. - Riding a 10-game unbeaten streak that is second-longest in the nation, Binghamton women's soccer (9-1-3, 4-0-1 America East) hosts longtime SUNY rival UAlbany (2-9-2, 1-4 AE) at 6:07 p.m. Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats are in first place in the conference standings with three regular season games remaining - two of which will come in a four-day span this week.
Binghamton has posted a pair of one-goal wins against America East opponents most recently, including a 1-0 road victory Sunday in Lowell. The Bearcats' lone setback of the season came nearly two months ago - a 2-0 road defeat at Monmouth on Aug. 24. Since then, the team has gone 7-0-3, including an unbeaten start to conference play. However, Vermont also is unbeaten in league play so the Bearcats can't afford to let up with a regular season title and playoff top seed at stake.Â
The Bearcats still boast two of the top scoring threats in the conference in sophomore
Jahkaya Davis (7 goals, 16 pts.) and junior
Paige Luke (6 assists, 14 pts.). Davis ranks second in goals and points and leads the conference (and ranks ninth in NCAA) with four game-winning goals. Luke leads the league in assists and ranks fourth in points. In goal, junior
Rebecca Kessler has a 0.91 goals against average - good for second in the conference.Â
UAlbany has dropped three games in a row and five of its last six. In the midst of the slide, however, the Great Danes posted a 2-1 win over an NJIT team that Binghamton tied. UAlbany has been outscored 6-1 in its last two setbacks (3-0 at Bryant and 3-1 to UNH). Junior midfielder Madison Hnis leads the team with three goals. Freshman keeper Claudia Volino has played every minute of every game this season and has a 2.23 goals against average. UAlbany was picked to finish eighth of nine in the preseason after going 3-12-1 and placing seventh last fall.Â
Since the two programs elevated to NCAA Division I, Binghamton leads the all-time series 13-8-5 and is unbeaten in the last four meetings. Last season, the Bearcats stretched a 1-0 halftime lead with three second-half goals and won 4-0 in Albany. Up 2-0 late, Binghamton struck for two goals in a 24-second span to close out the win with style.Â
After Thursday night's game, the Bearcats play their final road game of the regular season Sunday at New Hampshire. Â
