Women’s Basketball Defeated 73-60 at Columbia

Bennett scores game-high 16 points, Boyd adds 12 points

NEW YORK, N.Y. – For the second straight game, Binghamton erased a double-digit deficit on the road. This time, however, the Bearcats' opponent struck back.

Defending Ivy League champion Columbia (3-2) finished the game on a 19-6 run to defeat Binghamton (3-3) 73-60 in a non-conference women's basketball contest on Monday night at Levien Gym. The game marked the third straight time the Bearcats have played on the road.

Susie Rafiu led five Columbia players in double figures with 14 points. Perri Page added 13 points and game highs in both rebounds (nine) and steals (eight) while Marija Avlijas finished with 12 points.

Junior forward Kendall Bennett netted a game-high 16 points, going 6-of-10 from the field and swishing all four of her free throws. She also tied for the team lead with eight rebounds.

Junior guard Yanniah Boyd finished with 12 points to go along with eight rebounds and four assists. She shot 6-of-11 from the floor.

Fellow junior guards Bella Pucci and Leah Middleton each added 11 points. Pucci - who earlier in the day was named the America East Co-Player of the Week - was 4-for-7 from the field and 3-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc. Middleton, meanwhile, canned a pair of three pointers and grabbed five rebounds.

The host Lions appeared to be in control of the game as they led 52-40 with 5:34 left in the third period. Over the next 4:04, however, Binghamton stormed all the way back to deadlock the game at 54-54. Bennett punctuated the 12-2 run on a three-point play with 1:30 remaining.

Columbia bounced back with 10 straight points to take a 64-54 lead with 7:37 left in regulation. Avlijas led the way with five points during that stretch and sank a three-point field goal to cap the run.

Bennett turned in another three-point play, trimming the deficit to 64-57 with 6:41 remaining on the clock. Over the next 4:50, however, the Bearcats were held without a field goal and the Lions slowly pulled away for the victory.

Binghamton shot 46.2 percent from the field (24-of-52) and was 6-of-11 from three-point range (54.5 percent). The Bearcats, however, turned the ball over 22 times and the Lions scored 23 of their points off of miscues

"I think we are still showing some resiliency, which I like," head coach Mary Grimes said. "But Columbia is a good team to play for us to understand where we want to get to. We have to be able to take care of the ball better and keep showing resiliency the whole game."

Senior guard Meghan Casey scored six points, recorded a team-best five assists and finished with a pair of steals.

Riley Weiss and Mia Broom each added 10 points in the victory.

Columbia outscored Binghamton in the paint by a 52-32 margin.

Binghamton heads to UC-San Diego next Wednesday for a 2 p.m. EST contest.
