Women’s Basketball Wins Opener Against Geneseo 86-35

Bearcats place six players in double figures, record 24 steals

VESTAL, N.Y. – Six players reached double figures in scoring, highlighting an 86-35 victory by Binghamton (1-0) over SUNY Geneseo (0-0) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Monday evening at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The victory marked the start of the Bearcats' second season with head coach Mary Grimes at the helm.

Junior forward Kendall Bennett led a balanced attack with game highs in both points (16) and rebounds (seven). She shot 5-for-9 from the field and canned six of her seven free throws.

Senior guard Meghan Casey finished with 13 points. She went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, dished out four assists and added a pair of steals.

Junior guards Bella Pucci and Leah Middleton each scored 12 points. They also each came up with three steals and grabbed three rebounds.

Finishing with 10 points each were senior guard Kaia Goode and junior guard Yanniah Boyd. Goode also recorded game highs in both steals (six) and assists (five) while Boyd added five rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.

As a team, Binghamton finished with 24 steals, which ties for third all-time in program history. It marked the highest total by the Bearcats since they finished with a program-best 25 steals against Bridgeport on Dec. 11, 1999 - when they still competed at the NCAA Division II level.

On Monday against the Knights, the Bearcats took control of the game immediately with an 11-0 run in the opening 2:44 of play. Middleton had five of her points during that stretch.

The Bearcats then blew the game open with a 31-0 run to take a 50-10 lead with 9:09 left in the third period. All six of the aforementioned players scored during that run.

The lead was never less than 38 points the rest of the game and got as high as 86-33 with 1:09 left to go.

Binghamton shot 44 percent for the game (33-75) and was 10-for-33 (30.3) from three-point range. The Bearcats scored 46 of their points off Geneseo turnovers and dished out 17 assists as opposed to just eight turnovers of their own.

With SUNY Geneseo being a NCAA Division III program, the game on Monday counted as an exhibition game for the Knights. They are currently ranked No. 22 in the D3Hoops Preseason Poll.

"I'm really pleased with tonight," head coach Mary Grimes said. "We did very well in our (previous) scrimmages and were able to carry that momentum over to tonight against a very tough Division III opponent. Geneseo is in the finals of their conference every year and we did not take them lightly."

Freshman guard Klarissa Goode added seven points and three steals in her collegiate debut while freshman forward Daysha Salgado grabbed five rebounds to go along with three points.

Up next for the Bearcats is a Thursday night home game against Bloomsburg, with tip off set for 7 p.m.
