Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)

Women's soccer historic season ends in semifinals

Top-seeded Bearcats fall to fourth-seeded Maine 1-0 in double overtime

VESTAL, N.Y. - Fourth-seeded Maine (6-7-3) scored the game-winning goal with 4:38 left in the second overtime to end Binghamton women's soccer's (10-2-5) historic season Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the teams looking like they were headed to a shootout, the visiting Black Bears netted the winner with a fast-strike through ball and breakaway into the box. The loss ended Binghamton's record 13-game unbeaten streak that spanned more than 10 weeks and denied the Bearcats a second trip in the last four years to the championship game.

"I was pleased with how we played and thought we created enough chances," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "At the end, unfortunately, it didn't go our way. I told the team that as hard as this moment feels and how devastating a loss this is, I am so proud of them and how they represented Binghamton with pride and dignity throughout the season. This streak we've been on ... and the regular season title ... and all the great performances ... sometimes the game can be cruel. I hope when they get a chance to digest this, they will see the season for the what it was worth. I'm really proud of the culture they built and I know we will be back."

After an 11-day layoff as the regular season champion, Binghamton had a sluggish start and Maine had a big advantage in possession during the scoreless first half. The Bearcats' best chance came with 10:30 left in the period when sophomore Alexus Worrell sent leading scorer Jahkaya Davis into the box with a precise through ball. But the Maine keeper came out and blocked Davis's shot.

In the second half, the Bearcats returned to form but couldn't find the game-winner - the first time in nine games they were held off the scoreboard.

Sophomore Anna Buckwalter had strikes that just missed in the second half and overtime. With 1:20 in the second OT period, Buckwalter ripped an 18-yarder from the right side that the Maine keeper dove to deflect. The rebound bounced just out of the reach of junior Paige Luke on the doorstep.

Binghamton held an 11-9 shots edge and a 4-2 corner kicks advantage.

Junior keeper Rebecca Kessler made four saves.

For the season, Binghamton set records with a 13-game unbeaten streak (8-0-5) and just one regular-season loss. The team produced a second unbeaten conference season in the last three years and also went unbeaten at home during the regular season (6-0-1). In the last four seasons, Bhattacharjee's teams have lost just three conference games (20-3-9, 77%) - the highest win percentage among all America East members. The Bearcats were one of just five teams across the country that closed the regular season with one or fewer loss (Memphis, Notre Dame, Stanford, Fairfield).

NOTE
Anna Buckwalter and senior defender Allison Falvo were named to the All-Championship team.
