Women's basketball win third straight; defeat Marist 69-58

K. Bennett notched third double-double; 29 bench points

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's basketball (6-3) defeated Marist (3-7) 69-58 on Saturday at the Events Center. The Bearcats have won three games in a row for the first time this season.

Kendall Bennett collected her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She also provided four blocks and was 10-for-12 at the line, both season highs. Meghan Casey registered 11 points on 4-for-8 from the field and 3-for-6 behind the line.

"I'm really proud of our team for following the game plan." head coach Mary Grimes stated. "We really wanted to attack the basket and score in transition and I think we did that today."

Binghamton led for all but 19 seconds in Saturday's matchup. The Bearcats got out to a hot start, scoring the first eight points. Marist was able to close the gap and end the first quarter trailing Bing by only five.

The second quarter was all Binghamton, shooting their best percentage (58.3) and going on a 14-0 run at one point, entering the half with an 11-point lead.

The Bearcats' rotation of players continues to be a problem for opposing teams, as Binghamton outscored Marist 29-15 from the bench. Casey and Carletta Bennett contributed to 21 of Bing's 29 points.

Grimes praised the Bearcats' bench play. "We kinda have two groups that are going against each other in practice and are super competitive. They understand their roles coming off the bench and I'm really proud of them for continuing to defend and push the pace of play."

Entering the third quarter, the Bearcats continued to dominate as C. Bennett's layup with three minutes left gave Binghamton a 48-29 lead (their largest lead of the game).

Marist struggled defensively and saw 15 fouls called on them, with K. Bennett getting to the line 12 times.

"That was definitely a point of emphasis for this season (converting on free throws)." K. Bennett shared. "I wanted to get to the line and make free throws… while also just being aggressive when posting up."

In the final minutes of the game, the Red Foxes started connecting on shots and trailed only by eight with 2 minutes left. However, the Bearcats were able to hold on, with Casey hitting a three-point dagger to end Marist's run and give Binghamton their third consecutive win.

Bella Pucci provided a time high-five assists and Leah Middleton tallied nine points.

The Bearcats will head up north to face off against Syracuse at the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m.
