Softball Gains Split in Opening Day of Florida Invite.

Bearcats lose 2-0 to Boston College, blank Providence 3-0

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Junior pitcher Brianna Roberts fired a three-hit shutout and sophomore catcher Elisa Allen belted her team-best third home run of the season, highlighting Binghamton's performance during the first day of the Florida/Bubly Invitational on Friday at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. The Bearcats (4-3) dropped their opener 2-0 to ACC member Boston College (4-2) but bounced back to defeat Providence (0-5) 3-0 in its finale.

Roberts, whose complete-game shutout was the fourth of her career, improved her record to 2-1 for the season. She struck out a pair of batters and allowed only five base runners.

Allen, meanwhile, gave Roberts all the run support she'd need with her solo homer over the left field fence in the bottom of the second inning. One inning later, graduate student outfielder Brianna Santos singled home two more runs, padding the lead to 3-0.

Santos and fellow graduate student outfielder Lindsey Walter each finished the day 2-for-6 (.333). Walter's infield single in the bottom of the third inning against the Friars was the 100th hit of her career - a milestone that only 24 other players in Binghamton program history have reached since its inception in 1979. Santos reached that mark last May during the America East Tournament and currently has 110 career hits.

Sophomore second baseman Maddy Dodig was 2-for-2 with a double against the Friars and scored on Santos' hit.

Taking the loss for Providence was Alannah Hopkins, whose record is now 0-3.

Like Roberts, fellow junior pitcher Olivia Kennedy did not allow an earned run during the Bearcats' opening game against Boston College. In the bottom of the fifth inning, however, the Eagles took advantage of a pair of fielding errors to plate the only two runs of the game.

Kennedy went the distance, allowing  just those two unearned runs on three hits and striking out seven batters. Her record, however, dropped to 1-2 despite having an ERA of 0.93 so far this season.

Kelly Colleran of Boston College improved to 2-0 with the win while Bailey Kendziorski pitched the final 1.2 innings to nail down her first save of the year..

Binghamton continues play at the Florida/Bubly Invitational on Saturday against the second-ranked Gators at 2 p.m. and No. 12 Duke at 7 p.m.
