ELON, N.C. - Host Elon (2-5) scored the final six runs of the game and salvaged the series finale with an 8-2 win over visiting Binghamton baseball (2-4) Sunday afternoon at Latham Park.
After scoring 15 runs in the first two games of the weekend, the Bearcats couldn't take full advantage of four Phoenix errors and were limited to two runs on four hits. Elon sapped a 2-2 tie with two runs in the fifth and the Phoenix added three runs in the sixth and a final tally in the seventh.
Junior shortstop
Mike Stellrecht had the lone RBI for the Bearcats, who were just 1-for-11 with runners on base.
The teams traded single runs in four straight half-innings. Binghamton erased a 1-0 deficit with a run in the top of the second. Senior catcher
Zach Rogacki led off with an infield single and Stellrecht plated him with a two-out RBI single to left field.
But Elon answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame - the first of two home runs. The Bearcats tied it again in the top of the third with an unearned run. But the Phoenix collected three hits, including another solo home run to pull ahead 4-2 in the fifth. Elon then tacked on three runs in the sixth. In that inning, senior left fielder
Logan Haskell saved a run with a strong throw to the plate to cut down a Phoenix baserunner.
Binghamton heads to Johnson City, Tenn. next weekend for three games - the first against in-state rival Siena Friday morning on campus at East Tennessee State.
