Softball wins two more games at Madeira Beach

Bearcats blank Bethune Cookman 2-0, defeat Bellarmine 3-2

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Junior pitcher Brianna Roberts tossed a complete-game shutout and picked up a save while freshman catcher Rachel Carey hit a two-run home run, leading Binghamton (9-5) to a sweep in its second day at the Make-it-Happen Games at the Madeira Beach Recreation Center. The Bearcats started the day with a 2-0 win over Bethune Cookman (6-14) and followed with a 3-2 victory over Bellarmine (3-7).

The Bearcats are now a perfect 4-0 so far at Madeira Beach and have a season-high, five game unbeaten streak. They have outscored their opponents this weekend by an 11-5 margin.

Roberts is now 5-1 with a 1.11 ERA. Against Bethune Cookman, she fired a four-hit shutout and struck out a season-high seven batters. It was her third complete-game shutout of the season.

Later in the day, Roberts threw 3.1 scoreless innings against the Knights. She allowed just one hit and struck out four batters to record her first save of the season.

Carey, meanwhile, belted her first collegiate home run in the bottom of the third inning against Bellarmine. It highlighted a three-run frame in which the Bearcats rallied from a two-run deficit. Carey went 1-for-4 on the day but also drew a pair of walks to finish with a .500 on-base percentage.

Graduate student outfielder Brianna Santos continued to lead Binghamton at the plate on Saturday. She finished the day 4-for-7 with a run scored. Santos is now batting a team-best .458 so far this season.

Roberts got the run support she needed against Bethune Cookman when senior outfielder Bella Farina scored on an error in the top of the fifth inning. Two innings later, graduate student Lindsey Walter made it 2-0 with an RBI single down the left field line.

While Roberts earned the win, Gonzales Halyne fell to 4-10 with the loss.

In the nightcap, Bellarmine got solo home runs from Chloe Collins in the top of the first inning and Lydia Stowe one inning later to take a 2-0 lead.

That set the stage, however, for the Bearcats' rally in the bottom of the third inning. Before Carey's home run, junior first baseman Emma Lawson sliced the deficit in half with a RBI groundout. Santos later scored on Casey's decisive blast.

Freshman pitcher Savanna McHale pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief and was credited with the win. It was her first collegiate decision.

Kelsie Houchens went the distance for the Knights, allowing just three runs on three hits. Her record, however, dropped to 1-2.

Binghamton did not commit an error in either game.

The Bearcats close out play in Madeira Beach on Sunday at 9 a.m. against Butler.
