Women’s Basketball Beats UMass Lowell 72-42 on Senior Day

Weltz nets game-high 19 points as Bearcats clinch No. 6 seed in upcoming AE Tournament

VESTAL, N.Y. – Redshirt junior guard Jadyn Weltz scored a game-high 19 points and sophomore guard Bella Pucci added 16 points, leading Binghamton (15-14, 7-9 AE) to a 72-42 win over UMass Lowell (3-25, 1-15 AE) in an America East women's basketball game - and the program's annual Senior Day Game - on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. With the victory and UMBC's loss to Vermont, the Bearcats will carry the No. 6 seed into the upcoming America East Tournament and will travel to Bryant on Thursday for a 6 p.m. game.

Weltz was the lone Binghamton player taking part in the pregame Senior Day Ceremony and she helped her own cause by shooting 7-of-13 from the field. She also recorded two steals, dished out a pair of assists and grabbed three rebounds.

Pucci, meanwhile, shot 6-of-9 from the field, was 2-of-3 from beyond the three-point arc and was a perfect 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Like Weltz, she grabbed three rebounds and registered a pair of steals.

Sophomore guard Leah Middleton also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points. She too had three rebounds and a pair of steals.

Binghamton broke a 6-6 tie with a 9-3 run in the closing 2:11 of the first period to go up 15-6. From there, the lead grew to 33-20 at the half and 54-35 through three periods.

In the fourth period, the Bearcat defense held the River Hawks to just seven points.

"I just met Jadyn almost a year ago," head coach Mary Grimes said. "Her work ethic is second to none. She is in the gym all the time and her being a leader by example as well as on the court is a big part of us trying to get to where we want to go."

Sophomore forward Kendall Watkins scored eight points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds and four blocks.

UMass Lowell was led by Maddie Rice, who scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Nia Chima added 11 points off the bench while Rayne Durant chipped in 10 points.

The Bearcats outrebounded the River Hawks 41-26 and held a commanding 20-4 advantage in points off of turnovers.

Binghamton also dished 11 assists and finished with just nine turnovers.
