VESTAL, N.Y. - Senior catcher
Zach Rogacki drove in six runs to pace Binghamton baseball (11-10, 2-1 America East) to a doubleheader sweep over visiting Maine (5-17, 1-2 AE) Saturday afternoon at Bearcats Baseball Complex. The Bearcats walked off the opener 9-8 and then took the weather-shortened nightcap 8-3. Binghamton has now won seven of its last nine games.
In Game 1, Rogacki delivered the walkoff hit in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, he sent a deep blast to the wall in left center, scoring senior left fielder
Logan Haskell with the winning run. The run capped a see-saw game that saw both teams score runs in four of the seven frames. The Bearcats rallied to tie the score three different times and then after taking an 8-6 lead in the fifth, Binghamton saw the Black Bears rally with two tying runs in the top of the seventh. But in the bottom of the inning, Haskell drew a walk to lead off and took second on a passed ball. After a groundout, senior DH
Evin Sullivan singled to the right side. An intentional walk to graduate first baseman
Freddy Forgione loaded the bases with one out. Rogacki then ripped the first pitch he saw to the wall for a long, game-winning single.Â
The Bearcats' relentless charge was enough to overcome five Maine home runs in the game. Binghamton trailed 3-0, 4-3 and 6-4 before putting four runs on the board in the fifth to take its first lead. In that frame, the Bearcats sent nine to the plate and got a 2-out, 2-run double off the left field wall from senior third baseman
Devan Bade to tie it at 4-4. Sullivan then drilled a 2-run home run into the right field bullpen for a 6-4 lead.Â
Sullivan and junior second baseman
Zack Kent each had two hits and two RBI. Haskell and Forgione also had two hits apiece. The Bearcats took advantage of a season-high 12 walks from Black Bear pitchers.Â
In the nightcap, sophomore
Hayden Tarsia was in control in his first start of the season. Tarsia (W, 2-1) worked 5.0 innings and scattered four hits with six strikeouts. Amid difficult weather conditions of hard sideways rain, wind gusts and temperatures in the low 30s, Tarsia didn't walk a batter. The game was called with the Bearcats batting in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded and no outs as the temperatures dipped below the minimum threshold for conference play.Â
Binghamton scored twice in the second and three times in the third to jump ahead 5-0. After Maine got two runs back in the fourth, the Bearcats countered with three more in the bottom of the fourth and were threatening again in the fifth when play was halted.Â
Rogacki finished off his stellar day with a 3-for-3, 4 RBI showing in the abbreviated game. He produced a 2-run single in the third and a 2-out, 2-run triple to the left center wall in the fourth.Â
Freshman center fielder
Matt Bolton went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Sullivan and Forgione collected two more hits each. In the three-game series, Forgione went 5-for-10 and Rogacki went 4-for-8 with the six RBI. The Bearcats hit .368 on the weekend.Â
Binghamton next travels up the road to Ithaca for a Tuesday non-conference game at Cornell.Â
